also broke my dads MacBook pro core duo, loginwindow doesn't want to start up though, won't make it out of white apple screen in a normal boot

I have a similar problem. Software update advised me yesterday that iTunes 8.1 and a security update were available. I started the process. At the end the update window said iTunes had successfully installed but that there was an unanticipated failure to install the security update and that it had been put in the trash. When I restarted, I got the Apple logo and the spinning rods, then saw a brief flash of the progress bar before going to the blank blue screen with the arrow cursor. I was able to use the startup disk selection to switch to a hard drive with an older version of the system (10.4.8.) How do I fix the problem on my main hard drive which is alive & well except for the system problem?

I saw references to 'verbose startup', and 'single user startup' but don't know how to access those

I failed to mention that the disk utility found no problem with the original startup drive. When I booted from the install disk, changed the startup disk to an alternate hard drive and booted up from it, there was also a new file at the root of the original startup disk named "mds-crash-state". I can't open it. A search of Apple support on that filename returns no hits.

^sorry if I wasn't clear, but my 10.4.latest computer can't boot after 2008-007.
So after 2008-007, it looks like Apple broke some coreservices. If you need to get data off it, the best way is to hold t during boot, and plug in the computer via firewire into another computer.
I'm installing os 10.5 upgrade from the disk (this mbp needed it anyway) and it booted fine.
If you have your disks handy, reintstalling os x should fix it.

I am wondering, is this common for a certain portion of the OSX users to have this problem after every update? Or is this something peculiar to 2008-007?

I have also the hanging boot problem after the itunes + 2008-007 update.

do not update the security update 2008-007. I went back with 10.4.8

More info to help SOMEONE to advise how to fix the system boot issue resulting from either iTunes or security updates: I looked through the system/library files to see which ones had a date around the time of the onset of the boot problem. The suspects are system/library/find/japanesetokenizer and system/library/coreservices/encodings which had 14 files relating to various languages. Do any of these get called early in the boot? I'm inclined to try moving them to a folder outside the system and replacing them with the old versions to see if that solves the problem.

I tried moving the language files I mentioned in my last post and replacing them with the same files from my OS 10.4.8 gard drive. That had no effect on the boot failure, so everything is back as it started. Is anyone from Apple watching this thread? Any comments? The only thing mentioned in the thread that would appear to help is buying OS 10.5 or reinstalling from the OS 10.4 install disk and doing all the version upgrades from 10.4.6 (I think) to 10.4.11)

These forums are user to user only. A reinstall probably makes the most sense. I think you just need a single update after that.
