Error 13014 while opening iTunes

Dear all
maybe this error has already been posted but I could not solve it even after several restarts (which is mentionend in another post).

I use iTunes 8.0.1, my iTunes Library is stored on a Buffalo Linkstation NAS. When I try to open iTunes, I constantly get the error message 13014. I have not the exact English translation, but in German the message is: Das Programm iTunes konnte nicht geöffnet werden. Ein unbekannter Fehler ist aufgetreten (13014)." --> unknown error 13014

I tried already to use a backup version of the library but even this wouldn't work. Then I created a new empty library locally on my macbook to check if iTunes itself works properly --> which worked.

Can anyone help me? Thanks a lot!

macbook pro, Mac OS X (10.5.5)

I had a similar problem. Just in case anyone else runs into this here is what/why it happened, and how I fixed it.

iTunes "locked up," so I did a force quit on iTunes. Upon trying to re-open iTunes I kept getting an Unable to open iTunes error message. I looked in the directory where my iTunes library is stored and found a file called iTunes Library Genius.itdb.lock. I'm guessing this file gets deleted when iTunes quits normally, but stuck around since I did a force quit. Anyway I just deleted that file and iTunes opened as normal.

Maybe I found a workaround which worked on my mac:
Be sure to create a copy of the original files before and store it in a safe place before you begin!
- create a new folder local
- copy the iTunes library file to the new local folder
- open iTunes and press ALT (to choose the just copied library) and wait until that Genius thing finished screening the library
- exit iTunes
- create a new folder on NAS
- copy all the new files from the new local folder to the newly created folder on NAS
- repeat the opening procedure as mentioned above but now choose the library from the new NAS folder
- wait again for the genius...
- if everything went through --> overwrite the original files with the files which worked before.
I'm not responsible for any damage...

snitsel,
i ran into the same issue. this is what i do to circumvent:
i have the iTunes folder locally on my mac, and created a link to my NAS only for the "iTunes Music" folder.
since then, the message is gone.
Additionally, iTunes is a terrible heavyweight and if you only put the music folder on the NAS, you greatly improve the performance of iTunes.
hope that helps
