No Support for the Pro Market or even the Mac Mini users?

So we'll have to wait on an adapter to use this with a Mac Mini or a Mac Pro? Unfortunate, because I know a lot of people looking for an integrated web cam (or an iSight), with no option in the pro market. Sure there are add ons, but why leave out all the Mac Pro users? And what about the glossy screen? Surely more updates are on the way, but I don't think this is a good marketing decision.

I do like the features this has, but I was looking for a new display for use with my MBP, but this doesn't seem like an option.

I have been delaying my Imac 3.0Ghz buy, because I was waiting for the new Cinema Displays to use it with iMac on a dual screen and now that they have released it doesnt work with iMac 3.0Ghz ? 😟

People have been waiting for YEARS and I'm not exagerating, people have been waiting for YEARS for the new displays and now they release it but it doesnt work with the iMac & Mac Pro Desktops family ? 😟

Best,
David

Seriously! This display is not even going to be out until November and by then I'm CERTAIN a simple adapter will be available, even if all it does it port the video over. As for video & sound, that would not be a huge issue either, by adding another cable coming from the audio out jack, though the software integration might not be there. There has been huge speculation about MacBook/desktop integration and this is the logical concession by Apple towards giving the MacBook users an integrated solution. Seriously stop complaining about this NON-Issue and start contributing to the solution.

You're CERTAIN, are you?

Willing to put your money where your mouth is? I'll buy a 24" iMac tomorrow if you personally guarantee me that when this display comes out in November, there's a "simple adapter" available.

If there isn't, you refund me the money on the iMac.

Still CERTAIN?

Step up to the plate - consider it contributing to the solution.

It will be interesting too see how this pans out. Currently it doesn't make any sense. This display would be great with a Mac Pro (ok, I have an Apogee firewire audio interface and Yamaha monitors, so the speakers wouldn't get used) except for 1) the new connector (not a problem with an adaptor) or 2) the Mag-safe cable (would seem a bit odd for every Mac Pro user having one of these things having down the back of the desk).

On the other hand, I really cannot see why Apple would go to the trouble of bringing out a different version of this display for Mac Pros - maybe they might have both DVI and the new mini display port (but why bother, why not just supply adapters), and put on Firewire ports, leave out the mag safe cable - but isn't this a bit over the top to make 2 different models with such subtle differences? With Apple appearing to be dropping Firewire support (on the MacBooks, and partially on the MacBook Pro's), I'm beginning to wonder if any future displays will include Firewire ports (though clearly they should).

Very confusing times - I watched the keynote video wondering if they would clarify some of the odd decisions in these new products, but apart from saying that Firewire 400 would work with the MacBook Pro Firewire 800 port, I'm still no wiser.

Time will tell, but at the moment I'm holding off making any new purchases until things become a bit clearer.

Hello,

To be honest I think they could have messed with any other product, No white ipods ? we will cry but ok, new macbooks without being white we can live with that, new macbooks with ugly black keyboards ? ok not happy, but I will survive.

Now "messing" with the release of what I believe to be one of the most outdated and expected pieces for the last years and doing a screen that is not directly supporting the old mac's (new imacs & mac pros) and not providing the solution/adapter on the release date is just a VERY POOR MOVE from apple.

Apple designs stuff to look simple and perfect, would an apple/mac use be happy with an adapter and a magsafe without usage sticked out of the back, well I will not.

David

This thread is making me dizzy. Yesterday's event was about laptops, oops, I mean, Notebook computers. It was not about displays for MacPros or iMacs. So since the event was about notebooks Apple announced a display for...wait for it...notebooks! Why is that so shocking? Apple has a history of making unique and somewhat strange sounding, er, looking, or...well, products that make you scratch your head and wonder what they were thinking. Then 6 or 12 months down the road we all look back and shout, "brilliant!" (say this out loud with a british accent for the best effect) I predict that is what we will do this time as well. Apple will roll out 17" MBP's in a few months and then there will be adapters or even whole new displays for those of us with MP's and iMacs.

I suggest that we all calm down and wait and see what the great minds at Apple have for us.

Actually, if you can figure out a way to buy an LED Cinema Display tomorrow, I'll buy it for you. The Apple Store is not taking pre-orders for the thing and they only advertise a "November" ship date. So this thing could not even be available until after Thanksgiving. And by then there will be adapters for it – at least for the video portion. I really have no interest in this thread except I was curious how the display could be used with an older Mac. But I was shocked by the ridiculous amount of ridiculous outrage and complaints over the thing, so I had to comment. People who have been "waiting years" to upgrade. Folks, it's October. The economy is in the toilet and some of you may not even have jobs after Christmas (God forbid). The reality is there's another Apple product announcement coming in January, where anything could happen and I truly pity those who simply can't wait three months without complaining over the current offerings targeted specifically at MacBook users. And yes, I DO HAVE that much confidence in third party vendors to have a solution ready by November.

Actually, I don't even understand your question. You're going to buy an iMac ONLY if the monitor released for the MacBook series works with it? Maybe you should read your own question.

Unfortunately it took me a minute to understand what you were really asking because your question was so sarcastic and caustic. What you are saying is you don't want to buy a Mac product with a DVI port if Apple is going to drop support for it with all of their future monitors (this is what I mean about contributing to the solution, clear simple concerns posted without ranting and anger about what Apple subjectively did or did not do). This is a justified concern. However, unless Apple plans to update the mini, Pro & iMac in January (and they may), they risk a MAJOR consumer backlash from customers waiting for Apple to update their products so as not to be obsolete the minute they buy them. The Pro is the most future proof of all since a simple video card can be added. Will Apple actually offer these cards, or will third party companies offer them? My bet is that third-party company cards will be available by the time the LED display is released in November. Likewise, these same companies and others would be ignoring a huge DVI installed base for adapters, particularly in light of the fact Apple has said they were moving all of their products to this standard (read: ALL cinema displays). So I have complete faith this will be a moot issue by the end of the year.

But you want a guarantee. Well there are no guarantees in life. There is faith however. Frankly, if I knew you would keep that iMac in perfect condition, I might actually take you up on that offer. Because, unlike you, there are MANY who would gladly take a DVI-based iMac with no interest in attaching a Cinema Display, much less the LED one, and I could easily make my money back. That's how much faith I have in Apple and third party companies that I would be willing to make that guarantee.

Here's the rub for me, as I find out more about this thing. It has a built-in iSight and speakers. So does the iMac. Clearly this display was designed to work with the MacBook as a real desktop alternative, not just an external display. So what is it about this particular monitor you hope to actually make use of with your iMac? Style? I understand how it would work with a Pro or a mini, but with the iMac it is redundant. I am less confident to say that Apple will definitely convert all of their displays to match, but given that the LED now represents all displays on their "Mac" page, I would fully expect this to be the case. So why not wait and see? But put off buying an iMac because no future Apple displays will be compatible? Apple would be shooting themselves in the foot if that were so. The reality is that MDP is fully backward compatible with DVI and HDMI and if you'd do a little research on your own rather than proposing individual guarantees, you'd know that during this transition to MDP, third party companies stand to make a mint on adapters, even if Apple choses not to cash in themselves.

Moreover, if your concern is style, then no adapter or dongle is going to make you happy as someone else pointed out, the idea is to streamline it. So guarantee? Yeah, I'll guarantee it. I won't guarantee you'll be able to use the LED's iSight or speakers, or that you will like the dongle that's available. In which case, you should wait until they update the iMac with the MDP and stop complaining about the current offerings.

Guess what, I got 3 macs and a PC with ACD 20, great display I ve been using for the past 4 years! Wonderful to hear that a LED 24 version is coming out and I am ready to upgrade, I also got super excited about the cam/mic/speaker part, I have been using a MS NX-7000 for 2 yrs now sitting on top of the ACD. Since most of the intergrated hardware will work under Bootcamp, I assume someone will figure out a way to make it work with a normal PC. Then the worst part is to hear the MDP with no adapters listed at all and I ask an apple web support, and been told they hope one will come out someday.

I am going to get a another 20...

Unfortunately, there will never be an adapter that allows you to plug the new DisplayPort-equipped Cinema Display into a DVI port. The protocols are too different -- it is possible for a DisplayPort port, such as the one the side of all the new notebooks, to put out a DVI signal using a simple adapter. However, a DVI port does not output a signal that a DisplayPort device can understand. If an adapter is ever released, it will be a big, expensive electronic device that actually converts the signal, not a simple adapter.

Please note that I am EXTREMELY disappointed about this. I bought my Mac Pro in March, and have been waiting for Apple to release new displays so that I can use iChat's video features. My solution will be to buy a new video card that has a DisplayPort port, but it's really lame that I'll have to spend another $300-$500 on a video card in addition to the price of the display, not to mention the additional wait time for such a card to be released.

You seem to know what the new display port specs are considering you are saying that it cannot be converted. I know this for a fact. DVI is basically HDMI WITHOUT the audio component.

My question is, is the new display port just a different connector for a HDMI port? If so then it wont be a problem to convert back to DVI.
