iPod nano have better sound quality than iPod mini?

I've noticed more than 1 posts in this board now about the sound quality of the nano compared to the mini.

I don't remember where the first post was but the 2nd I found is located in the thread "Apple is going to have to do something about the scratching"

I must admit that the iPod Nano sounds way better than my G2 iPod Mini and if some Nanos dont scratch, there was not one on that table at the Apple store.

I give up on iPod shuffle now and going to buy the mini from my friend. But this statement is bothering me.

Is it really have better sound quality than the mini?

Thank you.

Yep, it does sound a lot better.

I went to the Apple store and listened to my mini with my Apple ear buds and then plugged them into the nano and it was obvious that the nano sounded better, plus I format all my music at MP3 192kbs and I'm pretty sure they (store) had thiers formated with aac which is good for saving room but not quality.

Though I might be wrong since I did not actually see what they incoded thier music at, im just assuming.

The sound quality isnt a deal maker as any iPod has excellent sound quality, Id base your choice on what kind of storage you need, my Nano is great for walks into town or the park, but my 40Gb is the one that gets used through my home stereo, lying in bed or whenever Im away for any great amount of time because it carries just under 8000 songs where as my Nano has maxed out at just under 400 songs.

Obviously thats just my opinion

Take care G

There is a difference between the Mini vs. the Shuffle and the Nano. What happened is the impedance (sorry for the engineering lingo...but 🙂 was changed between the earbud and the output circuit on the Shuffle. The reason is that there was a mismatch. This would be like a 3 lane highway going into a 1 lane. The audio on the Mini would distort - try listening to a very bassy song on the Mini and the EQ on Rock or R&B - these have the most bass. Then try it on the Shuffle or the Nano. (note the Shuffle has no EQ - but note the lack of distortion. The Shuffle was the first 'pod Apple went back and matched the output impedance) The Nano has the same Shuffle circuit fix. Hope this helps - The Nano is amazing but those darn scratches!!!!

Something has changed which makes the nano sound better...be it a better quality amplifier, D-A converter, or some other component. The sound is much more open and defined. I always thought iPods sounded a little flat and plasticy. The only claim to fame of the shuffle was its bloated base. And of course this was heralded as a great improvement because the low end of many previous iPods went the other way - completely anemic. So finally we have an iPod that has relatively flat response and clear, full sound. (Not that previous iPods were bad...for comparison purposes, you've gotta exaggerate.)

BTW, it matters less with 128 bit-rate aac's or 192 bit-rate mp3's, and hardly at all if you're using it through a tape adapter in your car (grin). But with lossless and variable bit-rate mp3's or aac's with an average bit-rate of about 320, you'll have a better listening experience, no doubt.
