Mini DisplayPort to Composite/ S-Video??

Will there be an adapter to have this option? I think this is a vital option for both late 2008 Macbook and Macbook Pro!

Hi guys,

We had the very same problem when attempting to hook up my MBP for a performance, the Apple adaptors, MiniDisplay Port to DVI and DVI to S-video/composite doesn't work, and the answer is simple. While the DVI to S-video clearly has 4 pins around the + connector the MiniDisplay Port adaptor doesn't have any. What is then transmitted in these four pins?

From Wikipedia:

C1 Analog red
C2 Analog green
C3 Analog blue
C4 Analog horizontal sync

Unless there is some other way to get an analogue signal from the MDP NO Apple products will solve the problem. So *NO, NO and NO*, the adaptors won't and don't have the solution to the problem.

Look instead at either the more expensive solutions (unfortunally) or the cheaper one which was already mentioned on page two.

The two more expensive (approx 300-400$) would be:

Kramer Electronics VP-501xl

or possibly (for Mac's with Expressport)

Matrox MXO2 Mini
http://www.matrox.com/video/en/products/mxo2_mini/

which you can use for video editing as well. 🙂

So does this now work to supply s-video from the initial mini dp?

Purchased an Apple adapter -Mini Display Port to DVI-D, Single Link (female)
and an Apple adapter - DVI-I Dual Link (male) to S-Video

Third Party Adapter: Couples Apples adapter together using a DVI-I Dual Link Female To DVI-D Single Link Male Adapter

Just a question: Why would you recommend the PC to Video EZ over the Apple DVI to video adapter that can be easily interfaced with the Mac Book Pro via its mini display port? The cofiguration would be something like this: Mac Book Pro mini display port->vga adapter->Apple DVI to video adapter->rca "composite" cable->TV set. Would something like this work? Thanks in advance for your comments.

No, it wouldn't work — some posters in this thread and others have tried it. This is because there is no secondary analog signal emitted from the MBP's mini-displayport. A converter box needs to be used to synthesize an analog signal from the computer's digital-only output.

If the computer produced an analog signal, then what you propose would work.

Last I checked, reading the thread often provides a lot of answers before you have to post a question. Just sayin. I'm sick of getting emails saying there's a new answer in this thread just to find the same post asking the same question...

On another note, the analogue mystery is still a pain, but I had the distinct pleasure of plugging into an HD system the other day at the Capitol City sports club, and ****, this thing looks good on all those 60"+ screens!!!!

As a VJ and video artist, I just purchased a new MBP one month ago, plus a MDP-DVI-adapter, hoping that I could use it with the DVI-Composite-adapter that I already had. What a bummer!! And after reading the whole thread, it seams that I'm not alone with this frustration.

The only workaround for me to get my video signal converted in a proper way is to purchase both the MDP-VGA-adapter and a converter box. More money spent, more stuff to carry around.

It's just one step further in Apples policy of dropping all kinds of ports - and letting thousands of Pro users down. I can see the MacbookPro of the future: zero USB, zero firewire, zero ethernet, no PCI-slot - only WLAN is left. Ultimate independency, yay!

I'm really angry.

I bought this -> http://www.svideo.com/vga2videosmall.html from Hong Kong. 27€ shipping included.

Works like a charm with modul8.
I keep it in its original box with all kind of converters i collected during the last years as vj. Easy to carry on.
Bad: before i connected my mbp to the mixer (edirol v4) directly, now i've to build an enormous chain and connect 1 usb for power, 1 minidisplay port -> vga converter, 1 vga cable -> scan converter and then scan converter -> s-video.
It's not a drama, just a little annoying.

Hey,

I'm looking for connecting my new mac-mini (late 2009) via video converter (i bought one) to my old analog tv. There are two adapters available in apple store: Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter (A$45) and Apple Mini DVI to VGA Adapter (A$25). Mac-mini has both (mini displayport and mini dvi) ports available. I know some users tried Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter and it worked for them. I'm just wondering if that will work with Apple Mini DVI to VGA Adapter as well. Do you think it will?

Just to add a little perspective to this dilemna, you won't find S-Video on any new laptop, Mac OR PC. And very few new laptops will be s-video capable through their vga ports. S-Video is dead. I've come to terms with that, therefore I've informed my bosses that I won't be spinning any videos until they step up their equipment. The software I use has outgrown any comp that's old enough to still have an s-video out.

Hey All....

So here is what my setup is like for all you video guys having some issues connecting to TV's or projectors...blah blah blah.

I have a Mini DP to VGA out of my MBP....
http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB572Z/A

Then I have a Startech VGA converter...
http://www.startech.com/item/VGA2NTSCPRO-High-Resolution-PC-VGA-to-TV-Converter- with-Remote-Control.aspx

From this I can connect to any TV/projector/ whatever....haven't had any issues at all with this setup....PAL & NTSC....so enjoy!
