Record live video from camcorder

Okay, as usual, I apologize if this has been discussed but I couldn't find a definitive answer and I am currently at work so I can't try it out because the equipment is at work.

Using iMovie '08, can I plug an iMovie support camcorder into the firewire port, turn the camcorder to camera, launch iMovie '08, select the camera option and then record the live feed from the camcorder without ever recording the video to the tape in the camcorder?

I don't see why this won't work but, as I stated, am currently at work and don't have the stuff with me to try out. Has anyone done this? Are there any issues? Dropped video, audio issues? Anything from anyone who has done this?

Thanks so much.

Dan,

I realize that it has been a long time since you asked, but the answer is "yes you can". I have a canon hd20 hooked up to my G5 with firewire and opened iMovie. Under a new project, slide the button to camera, with the camera on, and it should appear. The video is delayed by one second, but when you press 'import' you can record video with sound in HD. Then treat it like any imported video. you can edit, add effects, make a movie.

No need to record to tape.

Have fun.
