GPU overheating while playing games?

Take it to your Apple service center. These machines are too new for us to have much information about them as far as dealing with hardware.

Have you installed the Software Update 1.2 for the new laptops?

I'm sorry, but I can't suggest more than I have. These machines are too new. Take it in for service or replacement.

You should check whether your installer disc may have updated drivers for Windows. When you boot into Windows insert the installer disc into the optical drive. If Windows drivers are available then an installer should open.

I tried your method, of updating drivers. I know that the newest ones offered by Nvidia (178.24) have some performence boosts as well as other new features so I wanted to update as well.

I uninstalled my previous driver for the 9600M GT using the device manager, and selected 'Delete Driver Software For This Device'
After the screen flickered and resorted to a default VGA driver, I downloaded and installed (from laptopvideo2go) 176.22 (as 178.24 would not install)

Things seamed to go smoothly, untill I checked my device manager...
It now states I have a 9400M! Some how the drivers reverted to the intigrated Nvidia chipset, and is not using the 9600M GT. Any clue on how I can switch it back to the 9600M GT, or install the 178.24 drivers?

Edit alright, after installing the Apple Nvidia drivers, I was able to re activated the 9600M GT. I then proceded to install the 176.22 Drivers as I 'think' they are newer then the origional ones. However, the oens I really want are the 178.24 drivers. Any clue how to get those to work? Edit

Go to the energy saver system preferences and select the "Faster Graphics" option. You will have to logout and log back in for this to take effect.

Normaly yes... but this is refering the video drivers running in Bootcamp & Vista

Ah...didnt read that...

I'm assuming Apple will have to release Vista-specific drivers for the thing, or Nvidia will have to update their windows drivers to better recognize the hybrid-SLI hardware in the new MacBooks.

Yes hopefully. Anyway, Ive got these drivers changed again. And am currently running (178.08) drivers.

Its kinda funny... after I installed it, it changed the name from 9600M GT to, Nvidia G96. The code name for the actual GPU chip... lol

These new drivers are better, both in frame rate and in image quality. I was playing oblivion with about 10 more frames, and less aliasing artifacts. However... my GPU over heated. Just like as stated before

Screen whent black, then the sound keept loopping. Perhaps the Apple drivers are underclocked? I heard they were doing it on the 8600GT's and they even admitted it on the MBAirs with their 9400M's...

Hmm... perhaps its time to invest in a laptop cooler, and stop playing with my laptop on my bed. Lol

I've been playing Crysis on my new macbook pro in bootcamp/windows xp. i have a laptop cooler that my pro sits on. so far i haven't had any problems with it overheating.

Neither did I. Only after I installed these new drivers (non apple ones) Cool thing is, games look and run better.

I have this feeling the apple ones are under clocked. Because I've noticed that the windows side gets a lot hotter then the mac side during gaming. On windows, its gotten to the point of very uncomfortable to the touch, as in I could honestly burn my finger if I held it there for more then 5-10 seconds.

BTW, that resolution and settings are you running Crysis at? Apparently warhead runs better. Though it was pretty bad for me, it was defaulting to DX10, and I was too lazy to put it to DX9. looked NICE though

the problem is: unless this is an issue that can be reproduced on OS X as well, they won't be able to help you at the service center. Windows still isn't supported by Apple

I had this same problem after installing XP SP3 and Half-Life 2 on a BootCamp partition with my new MBP 2.4. I couldn't get off the train, after the intro, without the video going black.

Several times, if I left the machine alone to restart, then booted back into Windows, the screen would still be black, even though I could hear that it had booted successfully. After shutting down with the power button, and then restarting, all was back to normal.

I got the latest drivers, 180.42, and the "modded INF" from the site another member mentioned, and installed them as an update to my drivers, without uninstalling the Apple-provided drivers first. The GPU was identified as an NVidia G96, which sounded right. The update went well and I restarted.

Launching Half-Life 2 went normally, as did the intro, and I was finally able to move for more than five seconds without problems. I played through the early sequence in the train station and got to the exit, problem-free.

I do hope these updated drivers will resolve the problem that I have had, and that this method can help others also.
