Default system output wont stay on built-in line output....

anyone have any idea why it is that when i select built-in line output from audio midi setup and close the program it goes back to built-in output?

i have a digi003 audio recording interface and i cant select that and have it stay either...

mac pro, Mac OS X (10.4.11)
