Trackpad repair cost

Hi all,

I asked this question a few months ago but nobody responded, and the topic has now been archived, so I'll try again.

The trackpad button on my MacBook seems to be broken - every time I click the button it registers as either a double or triple click. It's getting worse as time goes on. Although tap-clicking still works as normal, it's irritating when I forget & try using the button, or when someone else is trying to use the computer. Does anyone have an idea of how much it'd cost to get repaired at a UK Apple store? It's been out of warranty for a while now, and I don't want to spend a fortune repairing a relatively old computer.

Thanks
J

I don't believe the individual part is available. You'll likely need an entire upper case complete with the keyboard, power button, and trackpad assembly. Here's an American retailer selling used/tested upper cases, if you want an idea of cost. They sell "A stock" and "B stock" depending on their evaluation of condition.

If it really is that big a deal, I would suggest using a mouse as a lower-cost temporary or permanent fix. My wife absolutely killed a trackpad button (it hangs funny) on her Dell laptop playing games, and a cheap mouse worked wonders. I prefer to use a mouse anyways, as they're easier to replace if something goes bad. I save the trackpad for those times where I'm barely moving my mouse around, or for trackpad tapping in place of the button press.

Thanks - that's quite a bit less than I'd expect an entire upper case to cost!

Unfortunately a mouse isn't really a practical solution as I only really use the MacBook when travelling (I've got an iMac for working at home). I'm hoping to upgrade to the new MacBook soon & a busted trackpad would probably lower the resale value of this one quite a bit.
