Slow PAN connection with new MacBook Pro

I have an older MackBook Pro, one of the first, running 10.5.5 and and brand new MacBook Pro bought today.

When I use Bluetooth to hook via PAN to the older MBP I get 65-85k downloads, when I use the new MBP I get a stuttering 3-6k. I've used the same setup pair procedure with both MBPs and even gone as far as retraining the older MBP and eliminating it for the phone/shutting off the older machine with no luck.

Any ideas ?

I am having the same exact problem. I have a Sprint Touch 3G EVDO phone-as-modem which I normally get 70-110KB download speeds on my MacBook3,1 but my new MacBookPro5,1 (latest rev) only get 3-6KB download speeds.

Have you tried reinstalling OSX? I think it is a long shot. It definitely seems like something is wrong with the bluetooth. Hopefully someone at Apple can address this soon.

Meanwhile, I can use my old Windows XP machine (running NAT32) as my access point.

Well it's nice to have company I guess 🙂 I'm going to have to get this answered ASAP I use the PAN connection daily and really want to move over from my old laptop. I just hope this isn't a hardware issue. I'll call Apple on Monday and chat up XDA Developers this weekend, see if any of the worlds smartest mobile hackers have any ideas.

I have pair and deleted the AT&T Tilt several times on both my old MBP and my new MBP. The Old MBP still performs a full speed when using PAN to connect to the internet. My new MBP is a DOG through PAN, 3-4k max download with long periods of no activity.

I've looked at both computers Preference files and they are basically the same. There is a difference between the Bluetooth software on the two machines even though they both run 10.5.5, I guess different bluetooth chips?

The older MBP uses a Cambridge chipset
The new MBP reports a Broadcom chipset.

I'm getting a bad feeling from this switch...

Call Apple Support and push them. The more people that complain the better chance this will get fixed.

I just spent the afternoon at an Apple store and I demonstrated the performance difference between my old MBP and my new MBP. Then we tried on a demo unit with the same slow results. Conclusion, PAN connects but veeerrryyyy sllloooowwwwlllyy. So at least there is one Genius out there thats seen the problem first hand.

Thanks guys for this post!

I also have this issue. I am using a HTC Touch Dual in Australia with a 'Three' network sim, phone is capable of 3.5Mb download. When connected to my xp machine and ICS is used I get hi speed. When connected to My new MacBook 2.4ghz I also get no thruput or very slow thuput.

the first thing I did is do a search and this topic was at the top of the list on google...

Lets hope we can get this fixed asap, cheers...

I have this problem as well, unfortunately I have a bad feeling that this isn't going to get fixed because it isn't a high profile problem for apple. Most users never use this function except the very technically inclined.

I for one am waiting to see if 10.5.6 fixes this problem and if it doesn't, we should all get together and write to Steve Jobs about it. Its a deal breaker for sure if it is not fixed....

did they fix this problem.

I am very annoyed. I got a new Macbook pro (early 2008) 2.6GHZ and the only internet connection I have is using the Pan network of my kaiser.

So I was all happy about my purchase, but I just realize that I cannot access the internet.

This is ridiculus. Please fix the problem as soon as possible or I will post about this in every single forum.

You are already making me regret the switch.

Hi, MBP. Don't bother posting in every single forum. Doing so in violation of the Terms of Use you've just accepted will only get all your posts deleted and yourself banned from future posting in any of the forums.

The Terms of Use also explain that you are only talking to other Mac users here, not to Apple. So your threats are empty and wasted, and your unpleasant attitude will discourage anyone from volunteering to help you.

You are also posting in the wrong forum for your 2.6GHz MBP, which is not the Late 2008 model. Try starting over, minus the attitude, and reposting here:
