Connection drops or extremely slow connection

Hello,

I have an Early 2008 Macbook Pro with Mac OS X 10.5.5. By the time I was running on 10.5.2 my Wi-Fi connection used to work perfectly, but when I updated to 10.5.3 I started to have so many problems with it that I even went back to 10.5.2 for a while.

I remember posting a thread in a forum and people answered me that it was impossible for a software update to mess up my connection. I proved it by downgrading and gaining full connectivity back. I've also found hundreds of people who have been having the exact same problem, but it appears as if Apple just doesn't care enough to give a definitive solution. Instead, I've tried tons of other so-called solutions from other people, that have not done anything good for me.

The problem is as follows: I can perfectly connect to my home network, but after 30 seconds- 2 minutes, my signal drops to just 1 bar (from full 4 bars) and I can no longer use it. To fix it, I have to disable my Airport card and then enable it back, to get another 30 seconds - 2 minutes. If I ever get to be connected for more than 2 minutes, my connection gets reaaaally slow (as slow that it can take me more than 5 minutes to download a 100 KB file).

Anyway, I'm 100% sure this is a SOFTWARE issue since the same computer running on Windows and resting at the exact same place doesn't have a single problem connecting. Of course, it has nothing to do with my router configuration. It is completely, entirely, 100% a problem related to Mac OS X 10.5.3 and above.

I love my computer in many ways, but this issue has been killing me bit by bit. What does a computer without a proper Internet connection work for? Then you can remotely understand my frustration.

Please, if you have had the same problem post it here. Apple has to do something about this, because I can't believe I bought such a useless computer!

Thanks.

I have the same symptoms as you with my MBP. I have proved that it is nothing to do with the ISP/modem - see http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8299537#8299537.

Click on the AirPort status menu on the menu bar while holding down the Option-key and it will show you which base station is connected, the channel, interference and the Transmit Rate. My Transmit Rate ranges between 1 and 130 every time I click the AirPort icon even though I am beside the AEBn. It should be a constant 130.

Turning the AirPort off and on sometimes fixes the problem, but mostly I have to log into my network using 'Join Other Network...'. Then I will have a perfect network for the remainder of the day until I shutdown and start again.

This started with 10.5.4, although, it could have been as early as 10.5.3. Don't believe it is the AEBn firmware as I rolled back to 7.2.1 and it made no difference.

The same thing happens if I am connected to either of my 2 AEBg AirPort base stations elsewhere in the house. I have eliminated other 3rd party software and peripherals by disconnecting my 30" ACD and Apple wireless keyboard, and reformatting my HD, clean installing 10.5.2 from my DVD and updating to 10.5.5 with the combo updater. Not migrating anything and not installing any software and the problem still exists.

Apple - an urgent fix is required - your product good name is going down the drain.

I believe the multiple error lines are caused by me clicking on the AirPort Status icon on the menu bar to check the Transmit Rate.

Can you spot anything out of the ordinary?

Oct 18, 2008 9:08 AM in response to iVmichael

Hello. Thank you for your reply.

I've turned off both IPv6 and AppleTalk with no difference whatsoever...

I've noticed a repeated message on my Console when my connection drops or slows down:

Airport: Roam (Beacons lost)

It's appearing every 5 seconds until my connection recovers for a little while. It must have to do something with the problem since it is very clear that it appears exactly when I have these issues.

After a few minutes I got this other message: time reset -0.348439 s

After that my connection went full again but only for 1 minute. Afterwards, it slowed down and the first message started appearing repeatedly again.

Do you have any idea of what it means? I'm gonna Google it to see what I find, but any further help will be very much appreciated.

Thanks!

Hello everyone...

I think I just found a definitive solution to my problem and I'd like to share it with you all.

If you read my first post (thread start) you will understand a little bit of my frustration. And I've tried all kinds of so-called solutions with no luck whatsoever. Those include all different configurations to my router (WEP, WPA, no security, different channels, varying the beacons interval, etc.), all configurations at my computer (resetting stuff, enabling or disabling functions, etc.) and again no difference whatsoever.

As somebody in this thread suggested (thanks, by the way!) I checked the messages on my Console and found that I was getting a message every 6 seconds that stated "Airport: Roam (Beacons lost)".

After Googling it (or however it is spelled) I found another forum with a lot of people having exactly the same issue ( http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8306094#8306094). Somewhere in the thread I read a post with something I didn't think would solve it. But, here's the solution:

Turn off Bluetooth!!!!

That's it! No more configurations, nothing else to do... Just turn it off and your connection will be back completely. And of course, turn off any other Bluetooth device nearby that could be causing the interference.

Well, I don't know if it will work for everyone, but it sure fixed the problem I've been having for months.

It's a shame I have to do it since I use a Bluetooth mouse and now I'm gonna have to stick to the trackpad (not to mention that I paid for this mouse). But I surely prefer a computer connected to the Internet than having a wireless mouse.

After doing so, I still get a few of those "Beacons lost" messages, but only one every 5 minutes and my connections still works fine!

I guess Bluetooth was causing interference since it uses the same 2.4 GHz frequency. I think it could also be fixed by upgrading to a 802.11n network at 5.X GHz. Still, I'm not gonna buy a new router and new wireless cards for all the computers.

So, please, if you found this information useful and you problem was solved too, please post a comment to let us know about it!

Thanks to all.

I, too, have been experiencing this issue. Probably for a while but certainly since the update to 10.5.5. The extremely slow connection (despite the Airport indicator not having any gray arcs) has been severely impeding productivity here.

Over the past couple days, I've finally had a bit of time to try to research and deal with it. I've tried a range of "fixes" proposed on various forums, to no avail.

Per this forum's suggestion, I've just turned off Bluetooth and (fingers crossed) am hopeful for a return to the previously reliable and fast wireless connection.

Oct 18, 2008 5:37 PM in response to agitpropre

Not real happy about losing my Apple Aluminium Wireless Keyboard, but if that is what it takes to get a reliable AirPort network, then I guess I will have to turn Bluetooth off.

With Bluetooth ON and following startup, Console shows this message:
19/10/08 10:02:28 kernel IOHIDSystem: Seize of AppleHIDKeyboardEventDriver failed
and the Transmit Rate = 1 - AirPort fails.

With Bluetooth OFF and following startup, Console shows this message:
19/10/08 10:17:23 kernel AppleUSBBluetoothHCIController::SendHCIRequest on suspended device
and Transmit Rate = 104 - AirPort works.

Not yet convinced that this solves the problem because my AirPort Transmit Rate is showing less than 130. I will run for a while with Bluetooth off and see what happens.

Note - I resynced the keyboard and it made no difference.

Actually, I think the problem isn't exactly the computer's Bluetooth... It may have to do more with Bluetooth devices nearby that interfere with the Wi-Fi signal.

So, I suggest you give it a try, but remember to completely shut down all Bluetooth devices near the computer.

I disconnected my wireless mouse and I've been using my connection all day without a single problem (believe me, after months of not being able to connect for more than 2 minutes straight, this is an amazing relief).

I guess this solution will not work for exactly all people with connection issues, but if your problem sounds similar to mine, I think you have a great chance of solving it.

Remember, it's about turning the computer's Bluetooth off, AND also all BT devices nearby...

Of course it's not an elegant solution, but it'll do the trick.

Hi Kevin, the saga continues hey?
I do seem to have made some progress though. I now seem to have a working network from my TC to my MBP 17" 2.5
The change I have made is disabling b/g compatibility, this has so far run OK for a week.
Moving to other networks or switching on this one option on the time capsule brings the dropouts back.
Specifically, I have selected 5 GHz, n only, Auto channel, WPA Personal security.
If anyone wants to try this, let us know how you go.

Thanks Matthew,

Don't seem to have the same options in AirPort Utility. My choices are:
Radio Mode: 802.11n (802.11 b/g compatible); 802.11 b only; 802.11 b/g compatible; 802.11 g only
Channel: 1 - 13 (think Auto shows if factory reset)
Wireless Security: I was set to WPA/WPA2 Personal; will change to WPA2 Personal

The difference could be that I have an AEB 802.11n (gigabit ethernet) where as you have a TC. Did you do a factory reset and then configure as in your post?
