Trouble with macports

Well I've spent countless hours downloading all the needed developer packages including X11user and X11SDK, unfortunately after successfully installing macports and using the 'sudo port selfupdate' command upon completion, I get the following output: 'sudo: port: command not found'

Am I possibly missing something that I over looked ?

Any ideas at this point are much appreciated.

MacBook 1.83GHz/2GB ram/intel core duo (white), Mac OS X (10.4.11)

What shell are you using and what's your PATH variable set to?

bash, the path is as follows:

PATH=/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin

There's your problem then. The installer should have added /opt/local/bin to that.

really ? i thought it did that automatically unless you downloaded from source
