Shared section in Sidebar --- refresh interval?

How long does the Shared sidebar take to refresh? I have a set of Windows machines in my network at home and they seem to appear quickly when they get turned on, but they seem to linger forever after they are turned off.

Is there a window before OSX tries to contact them and drop them from the list? Anyway to make it manually update?
