Using Ipod as a Flash USB Drive

I'm planing to buy an Apple IPod Shuffle, but I would like to use it more like a portable USB Drive, to transfer any kind of files, like Word documents, small video files, pictures, etc.

I understand that the ONLY way I can listen music directly form the IPod Shuffle is by adding the songs trough Itunes. But, for example, if I fill the IPod with several songs , and after that I put it in DISK MODE to take it to school and ad other type of files, will I be able to listen songs normally? or I have to disable the Disk Mode in order to use it as a music player?

Thanks for your time.

I had to install itunes 4.7.1 on my win2k machine before it would recognize the IPs as a flash drive. With just iTunes 4.5, it found the USB device but said there was an error trying to install it.

Usually I can connect a flash drive without any difficulty, so I was expecting the same with the IPs as a flash drive.

I have windows xp, and so do all the other computers I have tried using ips as a flash drive on. It seems you need to have the ips drivers installed on that particular machine for it to recognise it. Otherwise a message appears saying usb device not recognised. This is annoying as it makes the flash drive feature pointless for using at school because it doesn't work on the computers there which are all windows xp. Is there a way around this problem? I'd like to use ips as a flash drive. thanks

My personal experience is that I have been able to use the Shuffle as a flash drive, even on my work computer where there are no special drivers or any iTunes software (it runs XP, as does the computer I used to set up the Shuffle). I simply used the slider in iTunes to set aside a certain amount of space, 32 megs in my case, for file storage. I've not had a problem on any computer, although it appears that people's experiences differ. I am pretty sure that you need to have disc mode enabled and file space set aside on your Shuffle's "home computer."

I'm confused because some people have problems using their Shuffle as a flash drive on Windows machines, but others don't. Several months have passed since the last post. What is the general consensus nowadays about using the Shuffle as a flash drive?

Before I buy one, I need to be sure I won't load a presentation via my iBook at home, and then get to the office, plug it into a Windows machine and not be able to download it!
