Hey, I just got my iphone 3g yesterday and was told by the phone store that I needed to get the update, although I hate to do things like that I tried today and it as the other messager said, did not install and told me to restore and it will not restore either. When I turn the phone on it will only show me an apple as well and a usb cord symbol. I have tried several times to restore to no avail. I am going to call support and see what they say. I am stuck completely now and cannot even make a phone call.
Actually we're at least three! I've experiencing exactly the same problem. After downloading Itunes update 8.0.1, my Iphone's reacting the same way: showing the symbol with an USB-cable and Itunes-icon on upstart. And when I connect to my Mac at begin restore, it stops with the an "unexpected error (21)"...must be something wrong with the update??
Add me to the list. i have tried absolutely everything on the Apple page ON THREE DIFFERENT MACS and i still have a brick.
i'm getting Error (21) on two of the computers and Error (6) on the third. The (6) happens after the process gets "further" along, but it still shuts down.
Most of the info that i have found outside of the Apple site concerns users trying to hack or jailbreak their phones. i'm not trying to do anything of the sort... i just went to upgrade the phone on the first day that i got it and it's been shut down ever since.
i am having this problem with my 2 week old iPhone 3g as well. i haven't attempted to download iTune or anything. it started during the the first week after buying it. the screen would "freeze" up during phone calls and couldn't end calls or answer calls.
i made the appointment with local Apple store where a very snide sales associate advised me that the problem was the case i had selected for the phone. she said it was blocking the sensors at the top right of the touch screen. she promptely directed me to a new, appropriate case and suggested that the problem was solved.
well today, my phone displays only the time and the picture of the planet earth. it has been rendered a very attractive, and not inexpensive, piece of refuse. everything else appears to need restoring.
i have not tried connecting the phone with my computer. i will do that now. thank you all for pointing in the direction of what may be my solution. my confidence in going to the Apple store for one is a bit shaken. hopefully i will not have to go that route again.
i report back the results of my experiment.
i tried the "new user" fix on my MacBook Pro and it did not work, but it ended up working on my Powerbook G4. It's on the page that Apple refers you to when you select "help" in the error message dialog. Basically, create a new user with admin privileges and try restoring again. This fixed the Error (6) problem.
This did NOT work on either of my Intel Macs (My MacBook Pro and my wife's MacBook).
Don't get rid of your old Mac! It might come in handy some day!
Still can't fix the Error (21) problem, but the phone works now.
Incidentally, i had the exact same problem (and solution) with my wife's 3G. Purchased on the same day. Go figure.
The firmware on your phone is somehow corrupted. It either came out of the box that way or you tried to jailbreak it.
First, if you haven't already, install iTunes version 8 (http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/).
Next, plug the phone's USB cord into a USB port on the back of your computer (not a hub or a port on the front). Plug the other end of the cord into the phone (don't bother with the dock at this time). iTunes should launch and restore your phone. Give it up to 5 minutes to recognize the phone (it usually takes a minute), and 15 minutes to an hour to restore, depending on your Internet connection speed. DO NOT TOUCH THE PHONE UNTIL THE RESTORE IS COMPLETE OR YOU GET AN ERROR MESSAGE. Ignore any displays on the phone during this process, including an icon that says to plug it in. It's already plugged in.
If it doesn't recognize the phone after 5 minutes go to plan B. Disconnect the phone, press and hold the HOME button, and while holding it, connect to the cord AND CONTINUE HOLDING. After about 1 minute the phone should enter DFU mode and start restoring.
If this fails go to Plan C. Take it to an Apple store and ask them to fix it. Make a Genius Bar appointment first at http://www.apple.com/retail/storelist/. Look up your nearest store and there will be a link to make an appointment.
MY IPHONE SHOWS ITUNES AND A USB CORD ON MY SCREEN. I CAN ONLY MAKE EMERGENCY CALLS AND MY PHONE DOES NOT RING. I BOUGHT MY PHONE YESTERDAY . IF ANY1 KNOWS WHAT 2 DO CAN U SHARE THE INFO

I understand you are mad about your phone, and if that was me I wouldnt be bother with the phone if its doing all that. I would take it back to Apple are AT&T were I got the phone from and let them know what's going on and let them fix's it.Cause your phone sound like its corrupted are it's not on no services plan.Maybe they didnt do something right when you got your phone it might just be a typing error
Itunes told me i needed to restore my phone. The program took 3 hrs to d/l and then it said something about corrupt firmware. I have no idea what its doing. My phone does nothing but show me a little apple and some cables. Ive had the thing for like 3 days and i am already so fed up with it. i tried to do all the solutions i could find on the net, but i think im just killing it more. Please help me
