Why does my G4 keep freezing?

Using Tiger and Panther my g4 tower has continued to freeze more and more frequently. The freezing occurs at random moments, independent of anything I'm doing and affects the whole computer, not just the mouse and keyboard...everything freezes! I have tried clean re-installing the OS a few times and it still comes back. I also regularly use the program Applejack in single user mode, which seemed to reduce the freezing but now it has come back with equal and ever-increasing voracity! The computer was purchased in 2002. Surely there has to be a way to cure this. Does anyone know what it is, other than a really annoying disease!

There is about 50GB free space left on the 80GB hard drive.

General info

Machine model - PowerMac3.6
CPU type - PowerPC G4(2.1)
Number of CPUs - 2
L2 Cache(per CPU) - 256KB
L3 Cache (per CPU) - 1MB
Memory - 512 MB
Bus peed - 167Mhz
Boot ROM version - 4.4.8f2

I guess this info in the list specifies the variant.
I'm not sure how to test how much RAM is being used at a particular moment but it's not like it's freezing during heavy processes - it's only being used for word processing at the mo.

Hope you can help furtherly. Any suggestions more than welcome.

My iMac did that this morning. When it did the temperature sensor was at 65degrees. I couldn't even ssh in from a remote terminal. Have you opened up your tower and looked for dust? Heat will cause freezing as silly as this sounds. Blow dust out with a can of compressed gas. Don't use a vacuum cleaner. You may also need to use a clean cloth or q tips with some alcohol for caked on dust.

How many & which applications do you normally have open when it freezes? Does the Mac have to be running for a while before it freezes. If so, it could be heat related.

512K RAM is not a lot, so you are probably using Virtual Memory on your hard drive sometimes. If you suspect the RAM, look at this link: *Testing RAM* @ http://guides.macrumors.com/Testing_RAM Then download & use Memtest & Ramber. Although, usually if there is a RAM problem, you will get kernel panics at startup.

What external devices do you have connected?

I've got the same problem with my powerbook g4, constant freezing all the time whilst doing nothing particularly heavy duty. I've owned the computer about 3 years but the freezing has only come on really suddenly within the past month or so and it only seems to be getting worse, it takes ages to do anything. I've got an external hard drive but its not always attached, the problem doesn't seem to relate to that...
