Unstable after RAM upgrade

I installed 4GB of Patriot RAM from Fry's. The specs are:

2 x 2GB, DDR3 PC3 8500

Model: PSD34G1066SK

This is the same set at newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220338&Tpk=psd34G1066SK

During various operations, including SuperDuper, downloading files and watching YouTube, the machine froze and I had to restart by holding down the power button.

I've run memtestosx in single user mode and it didn't turn up any issues.

Should I return the RAM and get a replacement set? Should I go with a different brand?

Thoughts?

I received the replacement 4g upgrade from OWC today. It seem to be working, though it has only been an hour or so. But my last DDR3 only worked for 3~5 minutes before freezing. So it looks like it was first set of DDR3 chip that was causing the freeze.

Also, while I was waiting for the replacement chips I ran in to an issue with realplayer downloader program disconnecting the macbook from my wifi network. With advise from Apple Support I deleted the realplayer downloader application. If anyone who has this application and having freeze issues, this could be cause as well. Just food for though.

Another update. Everything seemed fine for a while. I was doing some web browsing then all of a sudden boom. Black screen on the bottom with a multicolored line toward the top and the white menu bar at the top stayed. The multicolored line flickered a bit and the screen never went away. The idle fans kept as they were.

So I don't know if this is the RAM or the computer or both. This is driving me crazy. I'm running a loop of the Apple Hardware test overnight. Maybe I'll have to buy the memtest and try that.

I received and installed a 4GB upgrade kit from OWC a couple of hours ago. So far, so good.

I bought an upgrade from the retailer when I purchased my Macbook last week. The tech that installed the RAM upgrade said that the store ordered from Crucial. My machine locked up regularly for two days before I got fed up and asked them to reinstall my OEM RAM and refund the cost of the upgrade.

Anyway, I hope I'm not jinxing it...

I got an email back from OWC and they told me to do an archive and install. I did it, and ran the Apple Updates. It then froze 5 minutes after that.

I think I'll be emailing OWC back to see if they'll accept a full refund past the normal 30 days and then I'll be talking to Apple to see what I can do about this and to see if they can sell me the RAM in the store or do some type of repair.

I wanted to add that I've had success with putting one of the original 1GB chips in along with one of the OWC 2GB chips. It's been working for 5 hours so far. Apparently others have tried this and it has worked.

Those of you with RAM problems try it and see if it works. As someone said previously, Apple support has claimed that OWC does not have memory management and if one of the chips are Apple branded it will work.

I bought my macbook at the Apple store. A week later, my f4 key fell out, I called AppleCare and they setup a genius bar appointment to get the issue handled. At the Genuis Bar, they looked at it and replaced my laptop right away. They told me that they would have to migrate my data over from the old laptop to the new laptop. I requested they swap my hd, but the genius guy told me they couldn't. Since they had my computer, I asked them on the price of the RAM. I was a student, so they gave me 10% and gave me the $150 buyback for the 2GB RAM. Somehow, it tallied to $133.xx after tax which accounts to about 20% discount.

This is how it went down for me, but NO IDEA how it even accounts to that price. funny thing is, the technician that worked on my laptop just swap harddrives. Silly "genius" made me waste a second trip to the mall instead of just waiting for the hard drive to be swapped and RAM installed.

back on topic:

my Apple 4GB RAM seems to be stable. I haven't had a freeze since I got it installed week and a half ago

So, I've been following this thread for a while and first got a set of OWC 4 gig kit. Worked great for about 7 hours then crapped out. Did the PRAM reset, system reload, and all that BS. Went into System Profiler and DIMM 1 and DIMM 2 gave no serial numbers what-so-ever. Most fields were 000 or something to that nature. Then did the 3 gig deal, 1 gig Sammy + 2 gig OWC. Stable but sluggish. Only the 1 gig Samsung registered with a serial number.

Just got my RAMJET 4 gig kit in. Went into Sys Profiler and got serials for both DIMMS. All seems stable as of right now. Will come back with an update.

Exactly. Same here with my original set of OWC on being Elpida. My RAMJET is Hynix branded chips. I thought they were Nanya chips (as pictured on the Ramjet website). I've had pretty good luck with Hynix in the past. Noticed that the Ramjet set of memory is significantly slimmer than the OWC's. They also seemed to snap in easier as well leaving a bigger stacking gap between the two DIMMS. This system's been up for a while and still no crashes. Been running for about 12 hrs now. Better than the original 7 hrs I was getting with the OWC stuff. Will be back with another update later in the day.

UPDATE:

So I was called by Apple tech support yesterday because they saw my posts. I called back this morning and he said he wanted to do research on my computer. He set up an Apple genius appointment for me today and exchanged the computer for me. What I'm left with is a beautifully working machine, a free upgrade to 4GB of Apple branded RAM, and a smile on my face. Great job with this Apple. I just hope they can figure out the issues with third party RAM and the MBs.

I suggest all of you pay a visit to your Apple store and describe your issue.
