Unstable after RAM upgrade

I installed 4GB of Patriot RAM from Fry's. The specs are:

2 x 2GB, DDR3 PC3 8500

Model: PSD34G1066SK

This is the same set at newegg:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220338&Tpk=psd34G1066SK

During various operations, including SuperDuper, downloading files and watching YouTube, the machine froze and I had to restart by holding down the power button.

I've run memtestosx in single user mode and it didn't turn up any issues.

Should I return the RAM and get a replacement set? Should I go with a different brand?

Thoughts?

That is why I don't believe Apple will "repair" his mac so that it now accepts all these different modules (maybe they can issue a firmware update to improve compatibility, but I'm not sure they are interested in doing that). If anything, they can hook you up with an appt at your apple store to get the recommended ram.
I think it might have something to do with the SPD programming. But all these manufacturers should've caught on by now. Can't they analyze the ram that is working and make the necessary modification to theirs to guarantee compatibility.
What puzzles me is places like OCW are aware of this problem but continue to sell the kit like there's nothing wrong.

OWC seems clueless. They say 90% of the returned chips work fine. They were 0/2 with me.

They are normally a great company. However, they had these chips available the day the MBs were released. I can imagine there was a possibility of something going wrong. It is odd they haven't been troubleshooting this and communicating with customers having issues a definitive answer saying they fixed something or found the defect in the nvidia logic board with other RAM chips.

I can add my tale of woe here, too, now a familiar one. Zero for two with the 4 GB RAM upgrades from OWC (Elpida). Both sets locked up the machine within an hour of startups. Resetting PRAM and PMU did not help. TechTool Pro says the RAM is OK - but it still can't keep the machine going for more than an hour. The MacBook obviously has a pretty low tolerance for RAM irregularities.

Dead stable with the original 2 GB RAM. Who will blink first on this one - Apple or the RAM manufacturers? I just hope it's soon...the machine is really fast on 4GB.

I had the OWC upgrade and the same reported wake-from-sleep-freezing problems. Returned those, ordered the Ramjet, and after one day it looks like I may have the freezing problem with that as well. Will continue to monitor.

Apple Store confirms they will charge me the full $300 for the upgrade, as I got the machine on 10/15, and even though they did not have the memory in stock when I got the machine.

Does anybody think that Apple will be able to solve this problem with a firmware update? Could the board be faulty?

Unfortunately there is no official apple store when I am so I don't know whether to have the problem looked at by an authorised repairer or mail it into Apple.

I am going to try to send the Kingston ram back and get some replacement ram. Was thinking of just spending the $400 or so dollars and ordering the ram from Apple but there is no ram listed now for the new mb / mbp's which is really unusual.

if apple is to be believed, they "recreated the issue" on my macbook and have been "in the process of repairing it" since november 19th. unfortunately i cannot get anymore details from them, i have to give them the 5-7 business days to work on it before i can start escalating things to get answers, they have had it since the 17th. i really think they're using it as more of a test subject.

i also found it unusual that there is no ram available for the mb/mbp on the apple website.

I feel your pain.

I have a shiny new MacBook about 30 days old now. Had the 4GB upgrade done @ Apple Retail Store. Recently, been having kernel panics and unexplained hard freezes. I was thinking my external Seagate 1.5TB FreeAgent Extreme was the culprit (as these often happened during heavy, large data transfers - but not always) but I have that drive hooked up to my 24" iMac over Firewire and it is moving 300GB with no issues whatsoever. This is extremely frustrating to say the least. I could understand issues with third-party stuff but this is direct from Apple, installed by Apple personnel.

If I were you I would open the back and identify the make of the RAM installed (just in case).

It is also worth checking the manufacturing week of the machine, have a look at your serial number (Apple Menu hold Alt down and select System Profiler). My serial number starts - W88 411Dxxxx -0 the 41 is the week of manufacture.

I have a colleague who has just purchased a machine with Apple supplied RAM and it is working fine, think his machine was week 46.

So far my machine is still stable.

I have tried out two sets of OCW (2x2g) and one set of Crucial (2x2g) RAM for the new Macbook Pro DDR3. All three had crashing and freezing problems.

To clarify, best I have heard is that there are two stable options at the moment. The first is obviously the upgrade from Apple. The second, best I can tell, is RAM Jet. Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks so much, I don't want to deal with RMAing another set of memory unless I absolutely have to.

just received my macbook back (dirty and missing a screw) from a seven day trip to apple for this problem. it was marked "unable to recreated problem." three apple reps last week told me three different things, one said they found the issue and it was being repaired, the second told me they were still trying to recreate the issue, and the third told be no trouble found...which was apparently correct.

anyway, while it was gone i returned my 2nd set of owc ram for a refund and ordered some crucial. just put it in a few minutes ago and noticed it is the same manufacturer as the original 2 gig of ram installed and shipped to me from apple (it has the M with the ellipse around it and country of origin is singapore). i read somewhere that crucial supplies most of the ram that apple uses, so hopefully i have better luck with this set. also, not sure this makes a difference, but this set shows the serial number in system profiler while the owc did not.

fingers crossed
