error code -50 in itunes

when trying to connect to the itunes stores i get the message"We could not complete your request, an unknown error occurred (-50)".

I have re-installed itunes v8 twice now but the problem still persists?

anyone any ideas on a fix as I cannot find any previous reference to this error code on the forums or via google.
