Time Machine Backup Drive Color

Hi all,

I hope this doesn't sound too silly. At times the icon color of my backup drive is yellow/gold and other times green. Does this mean anything? Does the color mean anything regarding the state of the backup? Thanks!!

No. Normally it would be blue unless it's a removable drive that you do not leave connected all the time or if have it connected but turn off TM.

The "yellow/gold" (orange) color sounds like the standard icon for a USB or FireWire volume. When you assign it as your Time Machine volume, the icon becomes green with a symbol of a counter-clock-wise arrow around a clock.

As long as your are starting up from your normal startup volume, it should be green because that system uses it for Time Machine. If you start up from another volume, it is probably the orange color, because to that system, it is just a regular USB or FireWire volume.

I think you may be right. When orange, I get the USB symbol.

It occurs after I periodically use DiskWarrior to prevent future problems. It was orange, and all I did was go to TM preferences and re-select The back-up disk and it turned blue/green as you stated. How simple! Thanks!!
