I have noticed a super weird bug with my new MacBook Pro. At least while running the integrated graphics chipset (not yet tried in power mode.)
When I snap a screenshot using Shift
Command3 (or 4) my computer takes the screen grab, however, then freezes for a minute or two. After that it comes back to life.
as I wrote in another post I've the same problem but only when I use the 9600M GT (no problem when I use the 9400M). And with the same graphic card (9600M GT) I've noticed others laptop freezes during very simple operations (for example, open the folder documents from the dock). Any solution?
ok, I've some news. I call Apple and I follow this procedure:
1) I turn off the laptop and removed everything (usb mouse, battery, power,..)
2) I press for 5-6 seconds the power botton
3) I plugged in battery, mouse and the others stuff
4) I press the power botton and press together these keys: cmd + alt + P + R
5) I wait to listen two "gong" (the first is from the boot, the second for the new botton)
6) I released the keys combination
7) I entered my MacOS System.
Now, what I noticed is:
1) when I use the 9400M everything is OK
2) when I use the 9600M GT it dipends. If I use the battery, the problem with screenshot remains (but now it takes 20-30 second of freezes). If I use the power-line, everything is well also with the 9600M GT. It seems that the problem is with the kind of power (battery or line).
This is the strangest thing. I'm glad to know other people are having the same issue. I expected this to be somewhat common because my brother has the same computer as I do and his does it too. I am fairly confident mine stalls no matter which graphics card I'm running.
Just to clarify what mine does: I type my screen capture shortcut command and it makes the "picture noise" but stalls everything else out. I use hot corners and none are responsive for about a minute and a half. The dock will not magnify or anything else. I assume this is what everyone experiences. I can move the cursor but little else. And even the movement is jumpy. Hopefully Apple will get a fix for this soon. What is the typical procedure for alerting Apple of a bug like this??
My machine does not do this. There is no delay in responsiveness after a screenshot. I'm running the 9400M currently. Does everyone have all the firmware updates and OS 10.5.6? My machine is totally updated.
Has anyone tried Repairing Permissions? Not sure that this will accomplish anything, but perhaps strange permissions on the Desktop could cause the screenshot utility to hang. In any case, Repairing Permissions is a pretty standard base-line troubleshooting tool.
That is strange (or maybe not.) I had experienced exactly the same issue only a few week ago. Tried tonight and no issue/freeze whatsoever. I guess one of those Apple updates (or Permission repair) must have sorted it. 🙂
That's good news! I bet it was probably one of the updates that fixed this issue, although it may have been related to permissions. Hard to say. I wonder whether the others who were having this same problem have updated and whether the issue still remains.
I agree. There are many screenshot utilities out there:
InstantShot! is another (free) and
xScope (shareware.) Preview can also be used for this purpose.
However, The built-in screenshot functionality should still work without the severe latency that some are experiencing.

It will be interesting to see which utilities slow down and which don't. Some probably will slow down since a lot of utilities, especially the free ones, hook into the same command line screen shot utility that OS X and Grab do.
