Restoring should not be the issue here. I just upgraded to the 3G iPhone and everything worked but Bluetooth pairing. Here is the troubleshooting tip for Apple iPhone Headsets (it's probably similar if you have a non-Apple headset)

    1) Turn the headset off.

    2) Press and hold the headset button for about eight seconds, until you hear the startup tones and then five quick high beeps. The headset remains discoverable for about five minutes. The status light blinks green for as long as the headset is discoverable. During this time, your iPhone should sense the headset—you can confirm it by going into Settings>General>Bluetooth>Then press the device name once it pops up.

    Hope that helps....

I tried all of this but the Apple Blue tooth device never shows up in the list. The iPhone just keeps spinning and the Apple blue tooth headset just keeps blinking.

Thanks. I found a posting by gunter1309 which says "weird, turned on airplane mode, then went to bluetooth in settings, turned on got message about airplane mode would be turned off if continue and touched ok, bingo!!! bluetooth on and discovered my iphone headset.... go figure".

I followed these instructions and it worked!! First time I ever got anything to show up under bluetooth!

I had the same problem with a phone sent directly from Apple. Read and had completed all of this and was short of doing a settings reset. iphone (original) would not recognize bluetooth. Saw the post about hard shut down and tried that. Power off with both "home" button and "sleep" button and hold until apple logo appears. Release buttons and wait. When came back alive- immediately my bluetooth was recognized and auto paired itself. AMAZING!!
Hope it works for someone else's "quirks". stay with it.

I had the same issue, the first time I used the airplane mode after the last update of Iphone software my bluetooth would not work. After a restarting and reseting the phone and bluetooth still not complying I was getting upset. I tried the trick mentioned somewhere in this string. Leave your phone in airplane mode and then switch bluetooth on and it will ask you if you want to activate bluetooth. Say yes and since then it has been clear sailing for me!

I was syncing my iPhone to my car's bluetooth and one day I turned off the Bluetooth on the iPhone and when I tried to reconnect to the bluetooth, I got the spinning lines too. It could not make itself "discoverable." I tried what others in the discussion recommended (a hard reset) and when it restarted, it located my Bluetooth "headset" of my car. Hurray!

I had the same problem twice.. And I solved it twice..
Once, I downloaded an application that depends on Bluetooth, anything, just find one, and it will force bluetooth to turn on.

And the other time, which is the EASIER solution, don't know if this will work everytime but, just put your phone in Aeroplane mode, turn on bluetooth, turn it off, turn aero off, and then turn bluetooth on. It should work, it worked for me.

    Good luck!

I found this on google. **** shame you can't find it on Apple's site.
    You should be able to!

Turn Bluetooth off, then navigate to Settings, then slide Airplane Mode to On, wait a few seconds, then slide it back to Off. It seems that discontinuing and restarting the EDGE and WiFi components in the iPhone can restore connectivity.

It worked for me. My problems started when I upgraded to 2.2.1 with a Vista laptop. No idea if the two issues are related.

My bluetooth setting would not turn on after getting off a domestic flight and exiting airplane mode. It kept spinning...... I tried all suggested reset solutions and none of them worked. Only one solution worked for me.

Going back to airplane mode again, and trying to turn bluetooth on while in airplane mode, at which time I received a prompt that said, turning bluetooth on will deactivate airplane mode, which I accepted. Immediately, all my paired devices finally showed up again.

    Good luck.

This my not work for everyone but my issue was my fault. My phone had to be exchanged for a new one. After I did a "restore from backup" I had to do a few preferences updates and reconnecting my BT was one of them. When I was at the window of the spinning wheel, I failed to follow the install correctly. After turning BT on, and then your BT device, remember to then hold down the start button on your BT device until you see it's name on the iPhone. Then select the device by clicking on it's name on the iPhone and then you will be correctly paired. I was just setting there as the wheel spun, waiting for the connection. That was part of the problem. Hope this helps someone. P.S. Thank you to everyone for all of the great suggestions. They are a tremendous help to me.

I had headset working fine, but it was not detectable after upgrade to 2.2.1

I can confirm this procedure: I turned Airplane mode ON, then Bluetooth ON, iPhone confirms to turn bluetooth ON. Even when my headset was over 100km away, iPhone listed my headset and marked it as "Paired".

This is fantastic! So much trouble for getting a headset to work.
My headset worked for one day, and then I turned it off and there it is!
Now I have spent a lot of time trying to turn on/off, hold down, pretending to fly etc..
    Still it do not work!
My phone can find it, but refuses to connect to it (after I have written the default password).
Yes, I have read and read! Yes, I have tried and tried.
I simply suppose this is not good enough (a Norwegian expression?).
Either the iPhone do not "pair" properly (most probably as I had to fiddle a lot before it was connected to my mac) or the whole bluetooth connection is a bit troublesome (also probable as blutooth mouse has never been a success for 30 laptops at my work!)
But hopefully somone will find a solution, or Apple will come with an upgrade which works....?
