Reduce bass in external speakers - Please Help!

Hey everyone! I have a question since I can't find a solution anywhere. Hoping someone might know a little more than me. 🙂

I am using 5.1 Logitech Z-680 external speakers hooked up through an optical wire to my MacBook Pro. Now I like to be polite to people in my apartment complex so I try to keep my bass down as low as I can go. Problem is, I have it as low as I can go. If I turn it down any lower on the control deck for my speakers I will have no sound. Also in iTunes I have a manual equalizer setup so that the bass isn't too much when playing music.

Now the problem is I can do that in iTunes but for the likes of me I can't figure out how to do it for my whole system. I want to customize the equalizer for the whole system so when I watch movies and shows on Hulu.com and play games the bass isn't so loud.

Is there a way I can do this in Leopard. Is there a plug-in or shareware (or freeware) available to customize the sound more on my mac?

All help is appreciated. Sorry for the long post just trying to make it as clear as possible to make it easier to help me out. 🙂

I've noticed with the recent updates to itunes, I'm getting too much bass in my speakers as well. The only thing I can find is to adjust the speakers as best as possible.

No freeware I know of, but Hear from JoeSoft (a division of Prosoft Engineering) will probably do what you want. It's been working quite well for me.

Airfoil has a graphic equalizer with presets.

Does Airfoil work for output directly from the computer to a set of speakers? I know that Audio Hijack does and it has an EQ plugin, but I thought Airfoil only worked to remote outputs like an Airport Express or another computer. Airfoil might do it now, though. It's changed a lot since the early days.

I like Hear because it runs as a background app so you don't have to keep the interface up and visible all the time.
