high cpu usage when playing sound?

I noticed that while playing music on itunes, the cpu usage is 10-14% That seems rather high... the usage is about the same when playing through vlc too.

I guess the sound driver isn't optimized?

MacBook 2.4ghz (late 2008) 4gig Ram, 60gig OCZ Core v2 SSD, Mac OS X (10.5.5)

Or playing sound requires more CPU time.

Also depends on the format the music is in... compressed formats are decompressed on the fly and that will cause a CPU hit, although the percentage the OP listed seems high for a modern machine. Try playing an aiff or wav file, see if there's any difference.
