Connecting Apple TV to home audio system

Question

Connecting Apple TV to home audio system

Does anyone know what's the proper way to connect an Apple TV to a home theater audio system. I tried connecting an HDMI cable from the ATV to my receiver, and various other approaches, but all has failed. Do I have to use a chord that has HMDM on to end and DVI on the other? If so, how do I do this properly?

I connected my ATV to my TV with an HDMI cable, and I connected the the ATV optical audio output to my home audio system with a toslink cable.

Welcome to the  Discussion Forums

Mine is set up the same as Cap's with an extra audio output on the tv connected to the receiver. Others however use an HDMI cable from the tv to the receiver and then from the receiver to the tv.

My receiver doesn't have HDMI inputs, and my TV doesn't pass HDMI audio out through its optical audio output for some strange reason (it's not a defect, it's a known issue with this particular TV make and model), so I had to connect the ATV audio out directly to the sound system.

Although I have HDMI pass through on my receiver, my particular set up was out of choice, partly I suppose because we don't have a remote for the receiver, but I'm not so sure I wouldn't have set it up that way in any case.

i have the same setup but thats also because
then i can turn off the tv and still listen to music
over the optical using the remote app

Same here again. Was looking at new plasmas recently and though I might get one with optical out, so I could relay any HDMI audio to the amp, but when you read the manuals they tend to only relay TV tuner digital audio through optical. DRM related nonsense again I suspect.

I suspect so as well. My TV also does not pass HDMI video out through the monitor output, so you can't record any HDMI video through the TV from its video outputs.

Hi this is exactly my problem- have connected ATV to t.v via HDMI but want audio through home cinema-tried audio connectors direct with ATV but doesn't work. What kind of toslink cable as there seem to be so many!!
