How much free space should I leave on my iPhone

I have been searching and can't find any guidance from Apple on how much free space should be left available on an iPhone. I have an original 8 GB iPhone and have lots more video and audio content than I have space available. I've read others say the same 10% rule should apply for free space on an iPhone as we've heard for regular hard drives, but others have speculated this is not the case. Does anyone know the answer? I also posted this to my own blog:

I'm not sure there is a definitive answer. I'm down to 400 mb at present and rarely have as much as 800 (10%) free. I don't notice any performance issues. I believe Safari may be more prone to crashing if you don't have much space, because the cache fills up as you browse and that can be a problem if you browsing alot or accessing alot of image-based content. But emptying the cache in Settings will normally fix that.

Just bear in mind that routine use will take up free space - it's not just ipod content. Internet files and emails and attachments will also take up space.
