Q: PowerBook 5300ce -Lost name volume

I just replaced the PRAM battery in my very old Mac PowerBook 5300ce. When I rebooted the computer after zapping the PRAM the name of the Harddisk changed from the usual "Macintosh HD" to ""'". How do I recover the normal volume name?
TIA

PowerBook 5300ce, Mac OS 9.1.x

Is it not possible to manually change to Macintosh HD by clicking in the name field?

It would probably not be a bad idea to run Disk First Aid (repair if necessary) before doing anything. Also, you may want to update the hard disk drive driver (back up important files before doing this).

As Jan is suggesting, the Hard Drive is an Icon like any other Icon in a Folder or on the Desktop. If you select the name-field below the Icon and type a new name, you should be able to rename it to almost anything that is a valid Icon name.

It may be possible that you have suffered damage to your Drive, but if it boots up properly, I think it is more likely you leaned on the keyboard with the Hard Drive name selected, and accidentally changed it to non-displayable characters or null.

Thanks to both repliers. As one of you described, I clicked on the name the very first time after booting up from the PRAM battery change. I changed to "Macintosh HD" and it did not take. The computer boots up normally. I can run applications. However the two symbols in the HD name do not change no matter what I do. I'll try the Disk First Aid and see what happens.

While you are at it you might as well try rebuilding your desktop. Hold the command and option keys down while rebooting until the 'do you want to rebuild the desktop on ,,,' pops up.

If you have Tech Tool or Tech Tool Pro you can do it from there as well.
