(Late 2008) Macbook memory upgrade requirements

I just bought the aluminum macbook. I really like it, but i chose to NOT upgrade to 4gb of memory because I was able to get 4gb of memory much cheaper through another online retailer. So now I am looking to swap out my stock 2gb of apple memory for the 4gb that i purchased.
Here's the problem:
The new macbook manual says that the minimum requirements for upgraded ram is...
PC3-8500 DDR3 1066 MHz Type RAM
but my new 4gb ram is PC2-5300 DDR2 667MHZ
will the new 4gb work and be beneficial to install? will it be detrimental to install this slower memory, even though it has more ram? Thanks in advance for the responses...

No. The computer most likely won't recognize it at all if it fits into the slots.
