DVI to HDMI and the sound?

DVI does not carry sound, so you'll need to run a separate audio cable from the audio output jack of your MBP to your TV. Note that not all TVs accept a separate audio input when using the HDMI input, so consult the manual for your TV to find out what your TV can or can't do.

Ok, you are correct about HDMI having audio, but unfortunately DVI is kind of an older technology. It is analog and does not carry sound. You can either get a separate audio cable to get the sound if your tv allows you to. Or you can just forget about that cord and get a VGA cord with audio and use the DVI-VGA adapter that came with the Computer.

And with the other problem with just certain things coming up on the display. It is doing this because there is a setting that you are missing. When you hook it up, go to System Preferences, and then to display. Click on one of the tabs (can't remember which one) and you need to check on the box that says Mirror. This will fix your problem for this.

And just to give a little advise, when getting cables, buy them from monoprice.com. They have quality products for dirt cheap prices and are very reliable.

Just a couple of clarifications and additions:

DVI is not analog, hence the name "Digital Visual Interface" (or sometimes "Digital Video Interface"). You are correct that it does not carry audio, as I said above.

VGA (which is analog) would be an option, but many TVs with HDMI do not offer a VGA input. Oliver will need to check to see if his TV has as VGA input; if it does, then it would been an option and may be the only one if his TV will not allow a separate audio input when using the HDMI input. But HDMI/DVI will be the preferable option over VGA, if possible, for best quality.

When you switch to mirroring, the external display will then be at the resolution of the internal display, which in a 15" MacBook Pro is 1440 x 900. Your TV may scale that resolution or it may letterbox it, depending on what the TV can do and it's internal settings. Perhaps someone else here has a Bravia and can offer further insight.

It is not that old and not analog. And the age is not really the issue. When you make a video interface you pass video. VGA didn't either as the V in VGA means video just like the V in DVI. You may want to recall that invitation if you don't know the right answer.

HDMI the M means multimedia hence the whole integrated audio and video (and copy protection) all in one clever stream.

Ok, trying to do the same thing and to make this abundantely clear. I would still need to get an audio cable to hook from the computer to my tv as well as the hdmi to DVI cable?

I appreciate what has been said above & trying to connect my MBP to my TV.

However I came across an anomaly today in that a satellite box I am looking to purchase uses a DVI connector but this gives audio output when used with a DVI to HDMI lead connected to a TV.

All very strange
