My old 2.4 GHz core 2 duo MacBook Pro handled Aperture very well. I did not consider it slow at all.
I forget how many images I have in my library but it occupies over 70gig and my older machine was more then up to the task. I just picked up a brand new 2.53GHz MBP last night. I was only able to copy my image library and install some software last night. I'll be working with aperture tonight but I can tell you from what I did experience performance was very good.
I suspect it may be the harddrive speed or fragmentation... Aperture is really slow for me and has also been on my previous computer. What kind of harddrive do you have your Aperture library on?
I doubt it, Aperture is a slow piece of software just like iTunes... sadly...
I disagree, I've had zero problems or issues with performance with Aperture on my older 2.4GHz MBP never mind the new one.
I barely if at all ever see the spinning beachball in either application, I easily navigate around, the thumbnails are rendered and pop right up. Editing and other work is fast.
I was nervous that it wouldn't be fast when I bought my (now older) MBP because I sold my MacPro but I was pleasently surprised at how fast it was
I often have a hanging interface when importing a large amount of photos, updating mobileme galleries, creating new albums from alot of photos or simply selecting a photo and pressing F for fullscreen which can take a few seconds...
All these interface lags remind me of iTunes where the same problems occur when creating large playlists, importing alot of files, retagging alot of files or converting alot of files. The interface gets slugghish as **** and isn't really useable anymore.
I have found that Aperture on my new 2.54 MBP runs very well and is very snappy even in the slower 9400 series video mode. I have approximate 2000 photos accross 10 different products - most of which are in Nikon RAW format between D200, D300, and D700 photos.
I would easily recommend anyone using Aperture to use a MBP! One fine point - I am referring to version 2.1.2
Mobile me is slow, no argument there, so much so that I don't use it for web galleries. I perfer using smugmug.com to hold my images. Much faster, there's a plug-in for aperture to upload images easily.
I have no problems working within aperture so that's why I wrote what I wrote. I'm very happy with it on my MBP. 🙂
William... I noticed that you have both the Mac Pro 8 core and Mac Book Pro. I am considering both, perhaps you can help me. I prefer the compact notebook, love the track pad now, and really could use either at my desk. So, I have a great deal of RAW NEF files , and go back an forth between NX capture, Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop elements or Aperture, is the Notebook that much slower than the Mac Pro Tower? And, what amount of ram do you need for the Tower to work same programs? Then, is the screen on the Mac Book Pro a hinderance for color rendention comparision? Thanks.
Hi William - v. helpful post. I wondered if you could shed a bit more light for me. I'm considering a MacBook for it's small size, but wonder how it will fare on latest Aperture shooting with a D3. I figure the performance you get on the MBPro on the 9400 card would be a good indicator, as this is the same as the MacBook's? Could you shed any light please? My library is approx. 90GB, and mainly RAW D200 & D3.
Apple Store genius implied from his experience that RAW D3 images would be too slow on the MacBook, but I'm not so sure?
