when i burn a dvd, it goes through a stage of 'verifying' right at the end. This takes a while when I want to burn quite a few dvds. What does this stage actually do and is it important? There is a 'skip' button there and when i press it, the burning stops and the disk works fine (i think, i havn't really checked them yet).
1-What is this stage for?
2-Can I skip it or will that somehow screw the disk up?
3-The same thing happens when i create a disk image and then try to open it. The verifying takes ages the first time. Can i skip this?
Thanks.

Verifying is important as it checks your disk for any defects. Granted, problems are rare but not impossible. Still, if you are in a real hurry 🙂
When the Burn Dialogue comes up you will notice a blue button with triangle pointing downwards to the top right of the dialogue box. Click this and uncheck the "Verify Burned Data" checkbox.
Yes you can skip it. I do it all the time. The risk is it will be faulty and you won't know, but I've had no issues since I use good media and burn the disk at safe speeds.
Thanks. I use Verbatim disks (DVD-r) that have 16x speed. My PC burns at 12x and my macbook at 8x (I think). Would you consider this to be good quality media and safe speeds?
I'd feel confident personally. Though, if the disc is extremely important I'd do the verification, but if it's just general day to day stuff and you're in a hurry just skip it. Again, I typically skip it and haven't had any issues, but I could be lucky.
