iPod not recognized since upgrade to iTunes 4.9

I haven't done any extensive troubleshooting yet, but at a first glance, it appears that since the installation of iTunes 4.9, my iPod is no longer being recognized when it is connected via Firewire.

It does not mount on the desktop, cannot be seen by iTunes, and iPod updater does not see it as being connected.

I've done the usual maintenance, repaired permissions, deleted plists, etc... and nothing seemed to help.

I'll be playing around some more tonight, but I just wanted to see if anyone has experienced anything similar. I read a few posts here that were somewhat related, but most were USB issues, and not Firewire.

I am having the same problem, although mine began before I downloaded the iTunes update.

I connected my iPod via Firewire yesterday and it was not recognized (I connected on 6/26 with no problems). I checked the software update and downloaded the iTunes 4.9 update and the iPod update, but the iPod is still not recognized.

I too have done the usual maintenance and everything suggested on the support pages. I'm Getting frustrated.

The problem would seem to be Firewire related.

Plugged into Firewire my Mac Mini cannot see my iPod. I've just plugged it into Firewire and it works as per normal.

I'm just running the new update to see if that helps.

Nope! Just the same.

This is my first Mac and the more I use Tiger the more disillusioned I become!

Each software update just seems to be more trouble.

I hope Apple start to take this seriously they could risk the switchers switching back at this rate!

I had the same problem here: Brand new iPod, mounted 1 time, made the firmware-update and the iTunes 4.9 update. After that no mounting at all.

I came here to find a solution. Since there is no answer here, I tried the usual thing: reset.

I've just made a reset (pressing and holding center button and menu button) and there it is on my desktop and in my iTunes again. Everything is fine now.

Hope it helps ...

Yes! I too have the same problem. I initially thought it was because I have an "old" 3rd generation iPod and a G3 iMac. I was ready to buy I new iPod today, but now I see the problem is something larger.

Before I spend more $$$ on an iPod, I will watch here for a possible solution. Oh, iPod Updater doesn't work for me (again, it's an old, 2003 model iPod). I tried the "battery drain" thing- no luck either.

Was Apple's haste in delivering iTunes 4.9 (with Podcasting) a goof? Why was this not tested? I can't believe they would make a mistake?! Not Apple. Was Microsoft involved with the development of iTunes 4.9? I bet that explains it! (wink, wink)

Okay - This may be a long one but I hope it will save someone the frustration that I have felt for the past two days.

Recap of my problem- iPod connected via Firewire is charging the battery, but does not show up on the desktop or in iTunes. Also important to note; iPod is working fine on it's own, no problems playing music. Tried all the usual maintenance stuff, tried resetting the iPod - nothing was working.

I saw the post today suggesting letting the iPod battery run down completely before reconnecting and thought it was worth a try. Also saw another suggestion on a different thread that suggested shutting the Mac down and unplugging it for at least 5 minutes.

The solution (at least for me) - I let the battery of the iPod drain completely, shut down the Mac and unplugged it for about an hour. Started up the Mac and when it was rebooted plugged in the iPod. Behold iPod is recognized by Mac and all is right with the world.

It seems to me reading these postings that since so many different things are resolving the problem for people that there are multiple problems out there - two bad one solution doesn't fit all. Sorry this is so long, but I hope it will help and iPod lover out there.
