3rd gen iPod not charging through USB 2.0 on PowerBook

Hmmph. I just got a PowerBook and a USB 2.0 iPod cable, as my FireWire 400 port is presently overtasked with an external DVD burner and a 200GB hard drive. I knew that if I daisy chained my iPod after those two components, I'd get no juice (this has been confirmed). So I picked up a USB 2.0 cable, as I have a completely open USB 2.0 port. FWIW, I am using a third generation iPod 20GB.

Well, the darn thing doesn't charge through either USB 2.0 port. Yes, the PowerBook is plugged into the wall outlet for power. I can't imagine Apple would be shipping modern iPod's with only a USB 2.0 cable if they cannot and will not charge off a PowerBook. I REALLY don't want to have to charge it separately using the wall adaptor and then hook it up to the PowerBook to sync it afterward--that's lame, and I didn't just spend $2000 for a lame machine, I hope!

It is syncing just fine, just not charging.

Help?

Well, after being on the phone with Apple tech support for nearly an hour, they decided they couldn't figure it out, so I went to the Apple Store across town and had a chat with the genius. He confirmed that the iPod with dock connector (third generation) will not charge via USB 2.0, even though Apple's official paperwork says it will.

Problem solved when I bought a Belkin Firewire 800 to Firewire 400 cable to hook up my hard drive/DVD burner. Now the iPod is happily connected to the Firewire 400 port and everything's golden. The Belkin cable is even white to match the Apple cables. 🙂
