iTunes movie purchases will not play on external display - HDCP auth error

Hello,

Well, I'm surprised there hasn't been more of a storm over this one already but I expect there will be.

Just got a new MacBook last week and finally found a mini Display Port -> VGA adapter so i could use my 19" external display. I rented a movie from the iTunes store yesterday and when I tried to play it on my external display, it gave me a warning/error that the display was 'not an authorized HDCP display' and it would not play. Plays fine on the small MacBook screen, just nothing external. To make it even worse, i tried all the movies that I have purchased from the iTunes store with the same result... NONE of them will play on anything but the MacBook's small 13" screen. This is crazy unacceptable.

Has anyone else run into this yet or have any ideas of something I may be overlooking in order to get purchased movies to play on an external display?

Thanks!

Same problem here as well. I guess they want to be sure we HAVE to buy an
Apple TV.

Not gonna happen.

I'll buy DVD's at my local retailer before that happens.

Thanks Chris CA, your tips worked for us. We are on a MacBook Pro 10.6.8 connected to a Samsung LN46B65 series purchased around 2009. For us what worked was to change the displays so they were not mirror images and in iTunes preferences check box for standard definition.

Thanks so much for the useful information --- much more useful than anything Apple has apparently provided.

I have a 2012 macbook air, samsung 46lnA650 tv and an onky tx-sr606 av receiver. I tried to play an hd movie and it would not play like so many others. The funny thing is, even when I mark the box that says play in SD it still gives me the same error code. I know that all of my devices are HDCP compliant. I've looked on the forum for anything and just can't find anything that seems to work. I am just srewed or is there anyone that might be able to help out with this? Thanks in advance!

PROBLEM!!

I rented a movie on my laptop using my iTunes , left the house and pulled up my iTunes acc on my iPhone to finish watching my movie... and it's not there? what the fuc* is this bull **** I thought these phones and iTunes are suppose to be the new thing, to me this is stupid and not acceptable waste of money. SCAM , isn't the iTunes on your lap top the same iTunes acc on your phone? I just don't get it dosent add up, I've herd stories on here where ppl try to transfer the movie over by plugging there phone into there laptop but you shouldn't even have to do that, when you rent a movie on your lap top with iTunes it's should automatically be put on to your iPhone , just like it does with our music we buy on iTunes.

fix this plz. thx

I've not had a problem as I'm new to itunes and ipad and haven't tried to play a movie through my TV. So that everything goes smoothly (ie show my other half that buying the ipad and a movie from the itunes store was a good idea) can anyone tell me exactly how to connect either my laptop or ipad to my HD TV? TV has USB socket. Do I use the white cable from ipad or just the normal usb cable from laptop to TV? I need to impress, not get "I knew this wouldnt work."

I have a new 2.4 Gz, 4 core i7 MBP and just got the error message that I could not play a recently downloaded HD movie. After a while, I realized I hadn't authorized this new comptuer so I went to iTunes' store menu and authorized it. It still worldn't work, but after I quit iTunes and restarted I can watch HD download with no problem.

Okay people, I had the exact same prolem (rented movies would not play) here is what worked for me, I am running windows 7 on a HP Laptop with a Samsung 42inch LCD, connected via HDMI cable, this laptop has a gforce 9600M GT video card, and when i changed my setting and "use NVIDA settings" playback worked like a charm!

Like I said, it worked for me.
