iTunes movie purchases will not play on external display - HDCP auth error

I had the same problem connecting to my HD TV. I just confirmed with Apple support that HDCP will not work with VGA...even using the VGA to thunderbolt adapter. You have to connect with HDMI using a HDMI cable and the HDMI to thunderbolt adapter.

I am now able to play all my iTunes content on my big TV.

To all of you praising Amazon... I just paid for a full HD film, and I CAN'T EVEN DOWNLOAD IT.

It's streaming only for Mac.

So, no, that's also not the answer.

I own a Dell PC that I purchased about a year ago, with an HDMI output and BlueRay capability. I have been able to display HBOGo and iTunes movies in HD successfully on an 8 year old HDTV (Sony XBR) until yesterday, when I got the HDCP error message. I own 3 iPhones and an iPad, and those are the only places I can watch HD quality video from iTunes if I cared to do it. I can watch HD movies streamed from Netflix to my old TV no problem. This seems to be an iTunes issue. No more iTunes movies unless they come free with my next BlueRay purchase.

No, only content with a copyright from a major corporation.

Five years on... is it possible to "return" movies and get your money back form iTunes? I bought the second Mac 512K and have had only Mac computers ever since. This is stupid and they suck!

I'm so disapointed in Itunes. I work over seas and will NO LONGER SUPPORT MAC and APPLE!!!!!!!

This includes my over priced IPHONE. ANYTHING MAC IS NO LONGER USER FRIENDLY AND PEOPLE FRIENDLY!!! I spent thousands on movies over the past 5 -8 years. NO MORE!!!!!

I am rarely as angry as I am right now. A family night has come to a screeching halt. Every screen in the house is unauthorized to play our iTunes $10 rental.

Between the issues I've had with ios7, and now this - and reading this has been a problem for some for years... I've never been this disappointed in Apple.

I have the very same issue. Apple needs to fix this. The alternative is to not buy content from the store. I have also spent a lot of money to buy my content, not to mention the 20" cinema I can no longer view my movies on from the store. I used to be able on my 2006 macbook, but now that I've updated to a new macbook pro 15" I can't play anything on my cinema that is HD quality. Only if I purchase an apple tv.

My 2006 however had no problem playing anything to my display. I'm also entirely within the apple ecosystem so this is a huge insult to buyers and needs to be addressed.

The alternative for me is not to buy their content. For now that's what I've done until they can resolve the issue.

Not fixing the problem and remaining silent to the issue is making a lot of customers leave.

I have a very similar issue confirming all the anger against iTune policy.

I LEGALLY PURCHASED the movie "After Earth" in SD (Standard Definition) from iTunes at the exagerated price of 16 Euro(!!) thinking that I would have "owned that copy".

Today I just bought a Lightning to VGA adapter to connect my iPad retina to my projector and I got the message that "The connected display is not authorized to play protected movies".

So I bought at 16 Euros (about US$ 21) a movie, without support (DVD or Blue Ray...) and I can watch it only the tiny iPad monitor?

I will look for other providers of digital contents. Sorry, I am very disappointed by the way these copyrights are handled and by iTunes/Apple...

I feel myself fooled, stolen... and read this as an ecouragement to piracy. Bad story!!

Guys - the answer to this problem is buy content from amazon instant video. Never buy stuff from iTunes.

Yep, i couldnt agree more. Not being able to play via Apple TV on HD TVs is total junk. First and last purchase. Thanks for nothing iTunes.

I am so frustrated with Apple right now.

A while ago I decided to replace my DVD player and DVD collection with an iPad mini and started a new collection of movies through iTunes. I have now (particularly the last year or so) purchased a number of movies on iTunes and have been viewing them through my tv (lightning to HDMI) for a while; this seemed so much better than the previous DVD option......... NOW I get an error message that they are not authorised to play!! So these expensive movies can now only be played through my iPad mini screen; Joy (sarcasm)!!!

Dear Apple, I would not have purchased many of these movies if I had known that the goalposts were going to be shifted! I have even boasted about/recommended the iPad to TV (HDMI) capability to many friends and family who were impressed by my basic setup.... I wonder what they are thinking now.

If there is a solution to play my content (through my lightning to HDMI) then I am happy to apologise.

I realize your post is four years old, but it was exaclty what I needed.

This just happened to me for the first time. I've known about it for years. It has upset me enough to look it up and reply to this thread.

Whats weird is the dialog window, saying "The selected movie won't play on one of your connected displays.", while open, cranks CPU usage to max (in my case, 104%). What the heck? Everything around this problem/restriction has bad juju.

It likely isn't Apple wanting to enforce this, it's the tv/movie industry but Apple (and the rest) are making it happen. This is where I day dream and wish we would be the ones to force the movie industry to comply to our wants/needs.

I truly feel that all this is doing is punishing the honest customer. Please someone, tell me another situation where this bully-technology HELPS me.

try moving iTunes to your laptop screen, and then setting your display to 'mirrored'. Play it full screen and it looks pretty good. That made the difference for me.

agree with everyone that it is a pretty silly issue, surprised Apple would allow such bad user experiences.
