Q: iTunes movie purchases will not play on external display - HDCP auth error

Also, to add to my previous post, this is simply just an ITUNES PROBLEM. The HD videos purchased from the Itunes store play perfectly fine using quicktime. furthermore, to play these purchases using quicktime just find them with finder. follow this path to them open finder, go to music, then itunes folder, then itunes media folder, then the movies folder. Next you will need to find the movie folder for the HD movie you would like to watch, select the HD version and make sure it opens in quicktime. you will then BE ABLE TO PLAY THE HD VERSION ON AN EXTERNAL DISPLAY REGAURDLESS OF HDCP. I have had a back and fourth going with itunes support to get this addressed but they have failed to do anything. I hope this helps the general public more then apple support can in this matter.

No, i've got the same HCDP Message using Quicktime.

what version of quicktime are you using? what version of mac are you running? and are you using quicktime pro or the standard version? I am able to play my HD videos using quicktime version 10.1 on mac os x 10.7.2 on same external displays that i recieve my hdcp error when trying to play the same video through itunes...

I purchased a new hdtv and got the same hdcp error. What I discovered was I had switched to hdmi but left the old dvi cable plugged into the pc (win7). Unplugging the cable resolved the issue, even though it wasn't plugged into a display.

This may or may not help someone, but I figured I would post just in case.

I agree this is really stupid.  A Blue Ray or DVD never complain about which TV I have.  Why should an iTunes movie? 

If it helps anyone, what I did to watch the movie on my big screen TV is make the iTunes window as big as I could without using full screen mode.  That way the movie played and I managed to watch it on the TV and not on my MacBook.  Be careful not to cover the whole screen, the computer asumes you are on full screen mode and you'll get the error message again. 

Apple, please don't be ridiculous and stop this nonsense.  I enjoy the convenience of renting movies on the iTunes store, but if I keep getting this ridiculous message I'm going to stop and go back to my local rental shop.

My DVDs all play now. I assume an OS update repaired the problem.

What does this have to do with iTunes purchases?

Were you having a problem playing DVDs?

The way to deal with this is to start the movie, disconnect the hdmi cable, and then reconnect, and move the window playing the movie over to the large screen.  Hope this helps!

purchased "Shawshenk Redemption" on my MB Air 11" and I´m not able to watch SD or HD version. When I was downloading the movie, I was able to watch a part. But after the download was finished the HDCP error Message occured.

This is unacceptable!

Appe can´t just offer movies which are not compatible to their products. At least they have to inform prior to the purchase, that some versions might cause problems regarding HDCP and other legal regulations.

As this is my first post here. How can we open a Ticket or something like that, to push this problem in the correct directions, to get a solution or at least an answer as soon as possible?

today I purchased the Art of Flight a pro snowboarding documentary on my HP Pavillion dv6. It was playing just fine while it was downloading on HD.

all of the sudden 3/4 into the download there was an error indicating that itunes had encountered a problem and needed to be forced shutdown. I reopened it again and the movie WAS downloaded but no longer in HD.

I am really upset because I paid the $10 but got the $7 movie instead. Anybody have any advice? It's not fair that apple is doing this. Why would I be able to see it perfectly while it was dowloading and not hd afterwards?

same here I have the same problem but I have found a temporary solution without having to buy the apple tv

go to documents then to music then go to itunes then ot to movies go to the folder of your movie then DO NOT PRESS PLAY first hold two fingers then click for more options then click open with quicktime player

after that it should work all you have to do is drag it to the external display

the ba thing is you cant put it on full screen but its bout the same size anyways thanks for listening ! =)

My MacBook Air was refusing to play any HDCP content on the built-in display, and the SMC reset worked!

Thanks Chris CA, your tips worked for us. We are on a MacBook Pro 10.6.8 connected to a Samsung LN46B65 series purchased around 2009. For us what worked was to change the displays so they were not mirror images and in iTunes preferences check box for standard definition.

I have a 2012 macbook air, samsung 46lnA650 tv and an onky tx-sr606 av receiver.  I tried to play an hd movie and it would not play like so many others.  The funny thing is, even when I mark the box that says play in SD it still gives me the same error code.  I know that all of my devices are HDCP compliant.  I've looked on the forum for anything and just can't find anything that seems to work. I am just srewed or is there anyone that might be able to help out with this?  Thanks in advance!
