Is there a way to empty the trash in Finder for a USB memory stick only instead of the entire trash for all drives? I've seen a dated post stating that emptying the trash is for all drives, but just wanted to confirm that there isn't a way to select which drive has the trash emptied as this seems to be something that anyone using a USB memory stick would want to be able to do (who wants to empty the trash for the entire harddrive, when all you want to do is clean up a memory stick to have enough room for transferring a file). Many Thanks.
MacBook 2.16 GHz, Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM,
Mac OS X (10.5.5)
I attached a standard memory stick to move some files over from my old PC to my new iMac. On trying to delete the files from the memory stick by sending and dragging them to the trash can, it has deleted all, bar one.
I have emptied the contents of the remaining folder and all that remains is the actual empty folder icon.
Here are the problems:
When I try to send or drag this folder to the trash, a box appears for me to enter my password.
The folder remains in the memory stick (within Finder) but appears in the trash can as a folder with a new name.
When trying to empty this file from the trash it makes a confirmation sound but the file remains.
On checking the 'Get Info' for the file it then mentions privilages.
I am at a loss to undertsand what has happenned and would ask if anyone could offer some help.
I don't think the Finder has this ability built in, but you could always use the Terminal command "rm" or look for add-on utilities.
I think the real issue here is why you have things in the Trash that you are reluctant to empty; DON'T put anything in the Trash unless you are certain you want to delete it. If you have items you're not sure about, you could always create other folders for them.
Personally I disagree with users that keep files in Trash. I always empty Trash immediately after putting anything in it just so that I don't have the problem to which you are referring.
Having said that, I would say that if one really had to empty the Trash on a USB memory stick then they would have resort to using rm in Terminal to do it. Ugly and dangerous.
Create a folder on the desktop and move all the files in the Trash to it except the memory stick Trash files. Empty the trash and then move the newly created desktop folder or its contents back to the trash.
