Fireworks Won't Open

I installed an Adobe CS4 Web Premium upgrade. All the applications in Web Premium work except Fireworks. When I try to open it, I get an error message, "Fireworks cannot open. An internal error occurred."
After hours of being on the phone with Adobe, uninstalling, and reinstalling, I found that if I login to my Mac as another user, Fireworks will open.
I have run permissions and disc repair, but this has not solved the problem.
I hope someone can tell me how to get Fireworks to open under my regular user name.

HI Monty,

Try this ... locate this file in your account: com.macromedia.fireworks.plist
(The wording on the file might be a little different, but I'm close)

/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. From the Preferences folder, drag that .plist file to the Trash, empty the Trash.

Now, run Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities) and Repair Disk Permissions. Launch DU, select MacintoshHD 10.x.x in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab, then click Repair Disk Permisisons. Quit DU when it's finished and reboot your Mac. See if you can open Fireworks after doing this ...

In one of those forums, there's mention of this dialog, internal error occurred... when a font called Parade was used. If you have used that font in a Fireworks file, that could be culprit. Open your Mac FontBook (Applications folder) and see if that font is there, select it, then from the Menu Bar, click File/Validate Font.

I deleted the com.apple.recentitems.plist, emptied trash, and rebooted. Still no luck.

As for the links you sent me, the first link is to my post.
I tried the suggestions in the second link (Fireworks General Discussion), and nothing helped.
The third link seems to be about problems with opening specific files, rather than the Fireworks application.
I also have an open case with Adobe support, but so far, they have not been able to help. They did suggest, since I can open Fireworks if I am logged in as another user, to "migrate" all my files to that user. This seems like a very cumbersome workaround, and doesn't really fix the problem. Also, I know I can transfer everything to another computer, but it doesn't seem that I could transfer everything to another user.

HI Monty,

Trouble shooting 3rd party software can be frustrating. Do you have files saved in the Fireworks format that you have already created?

Also, since this issues is isolated to your user account, see if you can locate a Fireworks/Macromedia cache file. Try /Users/YourName/Library/Caches If there is cache file in there named Fireworks or Adobe or Macromedia, send it to the trash, empty the Trash and reboot and see if you can launch Fireworks. Also, if that doesn't work, if you are trying to launch Fireworks from your Dock, drag that icon off the Dock. Try to launch Fireworks... if it launches successfully, go to the Fireworks icon in the Dock and click Keep in Dock.

Since this is Adobe/Fireworks software, you really need to stand on them. Whatever you paid for the upgrade, tell you want your money back unless they can find a resolution to this issue. I honestly don't think this is a Tiger problem as we've tried the usual trouble shooting ideas. Perhaps someone else here will have better advice than I.

I contacted Adobe support and an engineer was able to help me solve this. I am using a Mac OS X version 10.4. 11. In my case, it was a problem font in my user fonts. I went to user:Library:Fonts and moved that font folder to a new folder with a different name. Then after I restarted my computer, Fireworks opened. Now if I feel a need for the user fonts I disabled, I will reinstall them one at a time and see if Fireworks still opens until I find the culprit font. I hope I don't have to restart my computer each time I reinstall a font to see if Fireworks still opens, but I might have to.
