Pairing with Bluetooth Carkit Ford Focus 2008

I have a problem with pairing my iPhone 3G with my builtin carkit in my Ford Focus 2008
The carkit is a Bluetooth Voice and Control and is Factory builtin.

The Firmware version of the iPhone 3G is 2.1

When i turn on bluetooth on the iPhone it discovers the Ford Audio. Then i tap on the discovered Ford Audio and it tries to connect but after a while the display says that it cannot connect to the Ford Audio. I expected to see an entry for the pairing pin but that doesn't appaer.

Can someone tell me what is going wrong

How to pair (authenticate) your mobile phone to SYNC
To make hands-free calls you must first pair your Bluetooth-enabled mobile phone to SYNC. Once your mobile phone is paired, use SYNC's voice dialing and simple voice commands to make hands-free calls.

AT&T Apple iPhone

1
When pairing your phone, you'll need to be familiar with the following buttons:
Power button turns radio on and off
ARROW buttons move through menu choices
PHONE button accesses the Phone menu
OK button confirms selections
SYNC will not pair your phone if the vehicle is in motion.

2
Your radio color and finish may appear slightly different from the radio images below. However, the buttons work the same way.

HOW TO PAIR YOUR MOBILE PHONE
Turn ON your:
mobile phone
vehicle
radio
Your vehicle must be running, not in Accessory mode, and not in motion in order to pair your phone.
By default, SYNC automatically turns on when the vehicle key is in Run and SYNC will automatically turn off when you turn your vehicle OFF and exit the vehicle, or if the 10-minute accessory delay feature times out. To turn SYNC back on, it is recommended that you restart your vehicle.

3
Turn ON Bluetooth on your mobile phone.
Note: You'll usually find Bluetooth on your mobile phone through the Main menu> Settings> Bluetooth> Hands-free.
(Please consult your phone manual instructions for enabling Bluetooth, the wireless technology that allows your phone to connect to SYNC, on your mobile phone.)
4
Press the PHONE button on your radio to access the Phone Menu.
By default, Bluetooth is ON in SYNC, however, if Bluetooth is not on when you press the PHONE button, Bluetooth OFF displays on the SYNC screen and changes to Bluetooth ON/OFF.
Press OK.
Set Bluetooth On? displays.
Press OK.
Bluetooth Set On displays confirming that Bluetooth is on.

5
SYNC will automatically search for previously paired phones. Connecting will display.
If SYNC has not yet been paired to any phone, SYNC will display No Phone Found. SYNC will then display Add Bluetooth Device. If there are other previously paired Bluetooth-enabled phones or media players on during the pairing process, SYNC will list them on the screen.

6
Press the ARROWS until Add Bluetooth Device displays.
Press OK.

7
The SYNC voice will say, "Press OK to begin pairing device."
Press OK.
8
The SYNC voice will say, "Search for SYNC on your device and enter the PIN provided by SYNC."
Be sure that Bluetooth is turned on in your phone.
Sync will actively seek for the PIN for three minutes. If the phone has not paired within three minutes, please begin again at Add Bluetooth Device.

9
Upon successful pairing, Connected will display on the screen.
Your phone may require you to accept the incoming Bluetooth SYNC request.
SYNC may display the name of your phone, such as Motorola Q. If you have personalized your phone, SYNC may display the name you created for your phone, such as Doug’s Blackberry.

10
SYNC will ask you if you'd like to set this phone as your Primary.
Once a phone is set as Primary, the system will automatically seek to connect to this phone first, each time the ignition is turned on.

11
Press OK.
You can choose to set this phone as Primary by pressing OK when YES displays.

12
Alternate choice
If you do not wish to set this phone as your primary, press the ARROWS until NO appears, then press OK.

13
If your SYNC offers the Driver Service, 911 Assist, you can set 911 Assist ON now.

14
If your phone supports Phonebook and Call History downloading via Bluetooth, you may download the phonebook to SYNC at this time, or exit Pairing Your Phone.
DOWNLOAD PHONEBOOK? will display.

15
Press OK.
You can choose to download your phonebook by pressing OK when YES displays.

16
Alternate choice
If you do not wish to download your Phonebook or Call History, press the ARROWS until NO appears, and press OK.

17
Phonebook Downloading will appear if you choose to download your phonebook.
Download Complete displays upon completion.
This may take a few moments, depending on the number of contacts in your phonebook.

18
To exit, press the ARROWS until EXIT PHONE MENU displays and press OK.
SYNC can access up to 2,000 phonebook entries. Download time varies, depending on the number of contacts downloaded.
To protect your privacy, the mobile Phonebook and Call History stored on SYNC can be accessed only when the same mobile phone is connected to SYNC. Neither the Phonebook nor Call History is accessible in any other way.

Problem solved.

I have a collegue with the same builtin Carkit but his car several months younger.
We checked both our carkits firmware and came to the conclusion that the firmware of his carkit was newer then mine.

We then tried to pair my iPhone with his carkit and that was without any problems.
So now i have to go to my Cardealer to upgrade the firmware of my carkit

The iPhone is very limited to what it can and cannot pair up with. It is mainly designed to pair up with headsets. I am guess that it pairs up with bluetooth and GPS units purely by luck. About all you can do is wait for the next iPhone firmware update and hope that your phone can then pair up with your car.

By the way, I have a 2009 Cobalt with built in bluetooth and my 3G phone pairs up perfectly with it.
