I use Melodyne studio and love it - one of the few apps. that I wouldn't want to be without.

In using it since version 2; personally Studio for me is slight overkill - the uses I have for it could be handled with Cre8. In addition to the usual pitch/timing correction, I've created some really odd flavors, using percussion to modify into other sounds etc. It's not just a correction tool. Also, I prefer to work with Melodyne as a stand-alone app (importing/exporting) rather than a plug-in but that's just me - YMMV.

Here's a comparison chart of the difference between the various options:

I use Melodyne plugin 1.0.3 as most at a autopitch correction, the actual plugin is quite limited compare to the other same family application (Studio - creo- etc..). It's quite heavy if you run several instances of Melodyne on several audio track. But when you see how to use properly it's a dream tool.. Can't wait for the free update that Celemony promise. Watch for the new generation DNA on their website.. It's awesome really...

I also own and use Studio, but I'll agree with John, it's most often overkill. Cre8 would probably be sufficient for me 98% of the time.

When I need to tune a lead vocal, or a lead a few harmony parts, I export those tracks from Logic (so they are contiguous audio files). I then open Melodyne in Rewire mode, and load the exported vocal files.

Rewiring in Logic though an Aux track, I can hit play in Melodyne, and hear the track playing back from Logic, while I tune in Melodyne (don't forget to mute the vocal racks in Logic, or else you'll be hearing them from 2 apps at the same time).

Once I'm finished, I export the track from Melodyne, and then import that back into the Logic song.

I also use the Melodyne Plug-in, from time to time, to spot fix small things, that don't need to be tuned all the way through a song.

I use it exactly as Jim does.... it is awesome in Rewire mode... very solid and as Jim mention, the transports work very well together... even changing the cycle area in Melodyne, seamlessly changes it in Logic and vice versa.

When importing the tracks back into Logic, I go to the first vocal track in Logic and start hitting 'create' then 'down arrow'.... until I have a blank track of the same object under each of the original files and then enable the 'Hide' button for each of the tracks that still has a muted file on it.. This way you can unhide the tracks as required when you want an original part of the track in question (maybe there was a breath that was treated strangely in the Dyning process)....

This method is great when you have 30-40 tracks of bv's that you want to refine and stack tight!

It sounds long-winded what Jim and mattrixx are doing through rewire... you can get the same results using Melodyne Plugin which integrates excellently with Logic. But the best thing is, you'll get the free upgrade to DNA when it comes in the new year which you won't get with cre8. And if you don't know about DNA yet, then you don't know what's about to hit you...

Actually, you're quite wrong here. Using the plug-in requires playing the song through in real time, for the plug-in to detect the melody.

Exporting a track can be done offline. So it actually takes considerably less time to export the vocal track, open Melodyne in Rewire mode, import and analyze the vocal track, and start tuning. About a minute, minute and a half, tops.

Plus, there are a few tools in the stand alone app that aren't available in the plug-in, that can be very useful.

This is true. If you own the plug-in, you'll be the first to benefit from DNA, when it's released.

I just started using Melodyne 1.0- I'm attempting to bounce a Melodyne file back to Logic. Using 'move/record file to' function in Melodyne, I saved to the desktop; the file is saved as a 32-bit wav and Logic will not import it. This is pretty fundamental ! Please help.... the manual does not explain how to bounce.

Apple/E in Melodyne opens the export window, where you will select certain properties, like sample rate and bit rate, for the exported audio file. Make sure you select 24 bit. Logic, as you have discovered, does not import 32 bit audio files.

I know it does sound long winded, but it most certainly isn't... remember, that we have both plug and standalone Studio version... so the choice is there. But the 'long winded' one is the most flexible and definitely the quickest way (not just for the non-realtime, but for the live contextual feedback you get from holding and moving a note in the Studio version) note: also referring to Cre8.

I am not sure about the eligibility, but I did come across one issue I've had with the melodyne plug-in within Logic and tempo changes.

If there is a tempo change in the song and a vocal part is recorded over the tempo change, Melodyne tends to get screwy. The recorded notes seem like they try to quantize themselves. I have yet to find a solution to this problem, so if anyone has solved this let me know!! If not, look out for that in the future. Once again, it's the plug-in version that does this.
