iChat and G-Chat Buddies

Anyone know why once I added the AIM buddies to my g-chat list, I can no longer IM my old buddies in iChat?

Only my two new AIM buddies can be accessed in iChat while all of my others are "greyed out"

macbook pro, Mac OS X (10.4.11)
