Monitor noise/static problem

I'm not sure how to describe the problem but here goes. I have duo 23" Apple monitors hooked up to a Mac Pro. The problem I am having occurs sometimes at start up and pretty much ever time I am in an Adobe program. The screen flickers and fills with what looks like noise/static. It started out just covering the palettes but it now fills the whole screen. You can make it disappear by opening a window and using it as an eraser. I've had it appear in both monitors but it mainly happens in the right monitor. We've unplugged and re-plugged in the monitors. We switched video cards; at first the new video card worked perfectly but its now doing the same thing.

A co-worker is also having this problem but she is on an iMac. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I've attached screen shots of what it looks like. The first is what occurs when I first start up my computer. The second is what occurs in an Adobe program.

I discovered something interesting today regarding this problem. I have my desktop wallpaper set to rotate every 15 minutes and the crazy flickering seems to happen when the wallpaper changes. But it doesn't happen every time. I changed the setting so the wallpaper changes every 5 seconds and the monitor goes crazy. The strange thing is that it only happens in InDesign whereas before it was happening in Illustrator and Photoshop. This still doesn't explain why it happens at start up...

I am having the EXACT same issue with my 2.4 ghz 24" imac. It boots up like this and I can use whatever i open as an eraser to get rid of it. I started about a month ago and after running a bunch of utilities like Onyx and it magically went away for awhile. No it's back and I can't seem tofix. Very interesting that you have the same issue. Any ideas? Anyone? Thanks

Same thinh here since the update to 10.5.5.
Tested many things:
Re-install original system.
Reset parameters etc.
Change battery.

The problems are so hard.
Actually the Computer starts completely after 3-5 reboots.
Somtimes no chance.

If i remove the GL driver for my 7300card - everithing goes fine.
Then on restart the system hangs on Loginscreen but the finder
works in background.
I can shutdown with shortcut (cmd ejectenter).
Sometimes the whole comp is freezing.

Reformat the hd and reinstall system dont get a solution.
Hardware test no error.

I dont know what i can do more.

Do the 10.5.5 update install any Firmware update?
My 7300 shows FW Vers 3011 an the boot rom shows "..D..".
Here on office it shows "..C.."

May this is the Problem?
Can i downgrade the FW of the 7300?

I want to test it for the last step.
If this doot work i by a hd2600 for testing.

Sorry for my bad english & greetings from Germany 😀

Aye Mate,

same thing happening here. I am replying to random threads currently being stumbled upon here at the forums. This is ******* me off for a couple months now...here is my current understanding:

Probably, we have two monitors, or some type of program is causing these issues. I am also runing Boot Camp and parrellel with Vista. WIN has not made my two cards work together EVER, even with all drivers. XT1900 + 7300 GT here, and starting to aggravate the OS X software seemingly.

My computer wouldn't restart until 20 tries, and now, since I've disconnected the second card (7300GT) it seems everything to go smoothly, restarts+ etc. Obviously this is the problem, but why?? OS X doesn't seem too much better than Windows at this point. Same issues, just different piles of sheische on fire.

I am having this same '"staticky" situation occur.

it first showed up during reboot after install of 10.5.5. i first thought it was perhaps due to my desktop picture being located on an external hard drive that may have been tricked into sleep mode by the reboot, moved the picture to the startup drive and it re-occurred this afternoon for the first time in 3 days.

it is normally very easy to get rid of the problem simply by squezing the mightymouse, to bring up Exposé which refreshes the whole screen.

oddly enough, each time it occurred, the mouse was over the menubar at the top during startup.

the first day that it occurred(immediately after install of 10.5.5) it simply would not go away at all, i would squeeze the mouse, it would clear, but as soon as the mouse went over the menubar again, static returned. after a complete shutdown and restart, THAT problem went away, not it only occurs at startup or not at all.

i do not(yet) have a second display connected. the machine is less than a month old. everything on the iMac thus far is Stock, so it's the standard ATI Radeon HD 2400 XT video card.

actual operation of the computer is NOT a problem at all.

We are seeing this too (see the attached screen shots). It started about 3 months ago with one system and is now occurring to various degrees on seven systems total. All systems have the same spec (see below) and are part of a 100+ system rollout. All systems are using the same image and the other 93+ systems are stable.

|- Mac Pro w/
| - 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
| - 4.0 GB 800 MHz DDR2FB-DIMM
| - ATI Radeon HD 2600 w/ 256MB VRAM
| - EFI Driver Version: 01.00.252
| - Mac OS X 10.5.5

Initially the problem was very sporadic but it seems to have gotten progressively worse with some pockets of relief here and there. Also there is no apparent consistency to what causes the problem to occur. The following troubleshooting has been performed and we still have no definite resolution.

|- Swapped video card w/ a card removed from a system not displaying this behavior.
|- Swapped monitor (all 20” aluminum Apple Cinema Displays) w/ a monitor removed from a system not displaying this behavior.
|- Reset logic board, NVRAM, and PRAM.
|- Replaced video card w/ a new card obtained from Apple under warranty (several times).
|- Confirmed ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT Firmware Update had been applied to cards and none of the cards required.
| - See this thread for further info on Firmware Update.
| - http://web.mac.com/sailhome/SailhomeMacZ/MacPro.html
|- Installed smcFanContol and raised all fan RPM settings by 200 to provide additional cooling.
| - Above was done based on the assumption the problem may be a thermal issue as noted in this thread.
| - http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1376038&tstart=50
|- Updated system from Mac OS X 10.5.5 to 10.5.6 via Combo Updater.
|- Modified the image used for the Desktop background.
| - Above was done as the pattern displayed seemed to be based on the background as the pattern would change when the background changed.
|- Deleted/reset various user account preferences thought to have something to do with video issues.
|- Rebuilt user’s AD account transferring all data to new account except for ~\Library items.
| - Above was done after noticing whenever we were logged in to the local Admin account the issue did not seem to occur.
|- Searched Internet via Google using various criteria, Apple Discussions Forums, as well as Mac-Wizards archives.

The only “fixes” we have found thus far are to perform any one of the following procedures. Each will remove the pattern after it occurs but none are a long-term fix as the issue eventually reappears.

|- Move mouse cursor into lower left corner of the screen for a moment. All systems have this set as the “Start Screen Saver” Hot Corner. Moving the mouse immediately after the screen goes black will cause the display to appear normal - without the plaid-like pattern.
| - Above always works.
|- Select the Displays icon in the menu bar and switch resolution to another setting and then back.
| - Above usually works but not always and can actually cause issue if it was not occurring.
|- Select a Finder or application window and move around screen as if erasing a blackboard.

The only other option we can think to perform, based on what we know at this point, is to reimage the systems. Obviously this is a last resort and we are hoping to avoid as there is no indication this will resolve and it involves a considerable amount of work.

If anyone has any suggestions and/or comments on how to resolve I would like to hear them. TIA.
