"Do not disconnect."

Someone gave my brother a 40GB iPod+HP a year or so ago: he never used it and gave it to me. (I think it's a 4th-gen: no buttons on front, no color LCD, slim docking connector on bottom)

I plugged it into Firewire and it updated some software automatically and then started charging the battery. It's been doing this now for over 24 hours, saying "Do not disconnect." Isn't this awfully long? I'd like to disconnect it and perhaps switch over to the AC unit (which my daughter was borrowing). Is this move safe at this point? The battery icon is showing full charge.

(ON EDIT) I gave up and unplugged it. We'll see what happens.

I have experienced this problem also. I have the same iPod - but a new iMac G5.
Here is what happens to me:
- itunes reports that it can't read the contents of my iPod (iPod works fine)
- iTunes tell me that I have to use update to restore my iOD to factory settings.
- After restoring to factory settings - iTunes can see the iPOD and starts to update all of the music.
- itunes hangs wile updating. - the iPOD says - do no disconnect.
- i have to force itunes to quit (else it would sit in tha state forever)
- I then have to wait for the battery in the iPOD to deplete. It will respond power up.
I repeat the procedure above and sometimes it restores completely and sometimes t does not.
I am looking for an answer to that problem.
