re: 3rd gen ipod wont get out of disk mode

Hi,
Iam going insane..had this problem for weeks now, when the ipod connects to the mac (tiger) it wants to change to disk mode all the time..it connects using firewire and the dock.
I have managed to wipe it using the disk utility, and re-install ver 2.3..but it still remains in disk mode, and yes i have tried numerous times the reset technique!, it just shows the apple logo then the dreaded folder with exclamation mark!!..the even stranger thing is, the only time it comes out of disk mode is when i plug the "car charger" into it, but only when the charge has reached a certain level!!!.. it seems iam doomed to using disk mode when connecting to my mac, then running out to the car and plugging it in to change over drom disk mode!! aaaarrrrgggghhhhh!!!!

HELP!!!!

If you select "Automatic update" in iPod preferences, you will be able to uncheck the "Enable Disk Use" box.

If you want to manually manage the music on your iPod, as I do since my iPod has a larger drive than my cube, well ... disk mode is the only way to do that.

I don't understand why that's a problem for you. Even in automatic mode, you don't want to just grab the thing and run - it is a disk drive and needs a little TLC including making sure it's not writing as you pull the plug.

Hi Richard,
The big problem is that it only seems to be in ipod mode when it feels like it!, it will sit in disk mode when connected to the mac, then i eject it and you would expect to see the ipod mode fire up and the main menu appear, but instead it shows the folder and exclamation mark, then it begins the resetting loop! and gets very warm (not good!)... but the only time ive had it in ipod mode was when i connected it to my car charger last week, after totally draining the thing!., but when i came to update it with itunes, it sat there comfortably for about 5 mins, then froze and reverted back into disk mode / exclamation folder!!?!?
Any help is appreciated

Is your music in your itunes safely? Can you see the iPod on the desk top?

OK. Try this:
1.) reset the iPod several times - don't forget to slide the lock key on and off between each reset.
2.) turn itunes off (and if it starts - quit), connect the iPod, open Disk utility and delete the partition and then erase the ipod drive. (Mitch likes to update with a PC and then update again with a mac - clever.)
3.) open updater and restore the ipod.
4.) now try to sync with iTunes.

If your still stuck, then we start looking for bad cables and connectors, reseting ports, etc. After that, we call Apple. How old is your iPod?
