This may sound like an odd question, but I'd like to know what are the best solutions to clean the aluminum, keyboard, glass display, etc. Is Windex safe to use to eradicate the fingerprints on the display? I've also noticed there are some fingerprints and other "gunk" on the outside of the display (on the aluminum) and I'm not sure if I should get some stainless steel cleaner like what you would use on SS appliances, or something else.
What do you guys think? I don't want to use something that will damage my brand new MBP...
24" iMac 3.06GHz & 15" MacBook Pro 2.4GHz,
Mac OS X (10.5.5)
i wouldn't use any harsh chemicals such as windex or ss polishers. I'm using a 'monster' microfibre cloth and solution for the screen and you can also use it on the casing, keyboard and trackpad.
bottle doesn't say what's in it but it works great on the screen with the micro cloth. You could use the provided cleaning cloth with a bit of water for the casing if you prefer. The problem with water is it usually leaves streaks. I think you'd be ok to use the monster solution or equivalent on the case though.
I use a hot very damp wet sponge to clean the display. For the keyboard and case I use Clorox wipes to disinfect and clean. Occasionally I use iKlear on the whole thing with a microfiber cloth.
And the Clorox wipes don't leave streaks or any sort of film on the metal? I have some of those same wipes but I was worried if they would leave behind a mess...
I bought the iKlear after an Apple Store employee told me that is what they use on the display products. It comes with a couple cleaning clothes and travel samples.
I also use iKlear (sold at Apple Store) and it works great! It puts this really nice finish on your screen, and you can also use it for the entire machine. Just don't spray it directly onto the surfaces, to avoid dripping internally. Spray a couple pumps onto the cloth that they provide and wipe in straight (not circular) strokes across the screen and other areas. I like to use the large cloth for the solution then dry it off with the micro-fibre cloth. iKlear also works great for cell phone screens, and iPods at that. Again its available right at the Apple Store.
Just use the Clorox wipes to clean and disinfect. Then wipe any excess off with a cloth. It doesn't harm the computer or leave streaks. Like I said and others too, use iKlear to polish your case, display, etc.
One other suggestion I'd like to throw out there...club soda. Just put it in a spray bottle, spray onto a soft cloth and clean the casing. I've used it on both the metal (on my Mac Pro/Wireless Keyboard + Titanium Powerbook) and on the plastic casing on my old reliable G4 Quicksilver. Haven't tried on my Cinema Display, so I'm not sure about that. Club soda is super cheap and non-toxic...plus you can then have a cocktail to toast your clean machine!
