Excel spreadsheet to EDL?

Anyone know where I can get direction on how to do this? I have an Excel spreadsheet with i/o points. I would like to convert it to an EDL, bring it into FCP and get automatically get my cuts without having to type 80 timecodes, manually break and ripple delete. Am I dreaming or is this possible?

Ariane, I have no direct advice, but thought I'd bump you back up the queue. I'm pretty sure this has been discussed here previously, so hopefully others will chime in.

In the meantime, have you tried this...?

I didn't see a reference to actually 'importing' the spreadsheet into FCP, but maybe I missed it.

If you export an EDL form something you've already done, then open it in Text Edit, you'll see the format that it has to be in. If you can create an Excel document that is in the same format, you should be fine. But if you have anything extra in there, it won't work. The most important thing is that you can't make a Rich Text document, it has to be plain text, same as creating chapters in QT.
If you know your way around Excel (I don't...) then you should be able to set up a template that will export properly.

I perused the Ken Stone article quickly, but as it was written so long ago (4 years) I'm not sure that it's still applicable.

As for the suggestion to export an EDL and dissect it, I did try this a couple of times, but couldn't quite seem to figure out the timecodes. The huge numbers listed in the text document were not exactly what I had in the FCP project. They were always off a little, but not by a consistent amount. Could it be because of dropframe? Is there something I'm supposed to take into account in the calculations?

I know that once I figure out the timecodes I should be able to convert the numbers listed into excel into an EDL by running some sort of Macro; I'll have to figure that one out. I also know that I should be able to include the cuts and transitions.

Has anyone done this?

I tried out the spreadsheet on the Ken Stone site and it works great. I'm not sure, however, how to turn that into something usable within FCP. I can see how the EDL works when I export it from FCP. My previous attempts were with XML; that was where I had issues getting the timecode to line up with what was in the sequence in FCP. Any advantages to using an EDL over XML code?

Here's what I'd like to do, specifically:
-I have already captured the footage. I have put it on a DVD with timecode filter on top and sent it to my client. They sent me back a list of i/o points. Previously I have typed those i/o points back in to the clips to set up my sequence.
-I'd like to use the i/o points from the client to generate an EDL or XML (whichever is better) to automatically make the cuts for me when I run it through FCP.

The Ken Stone article was good, but didn't tell me how to make it into an EDL, or have it make the cuts using those points.

Transitions, provided you stick to the ones recommended in the user manual (bare bones) and especially if you know what you're doing, should work. They will, of course, need tweaking. According to the user manual, you should be able to include keyframed audio levels in the EDL. It's on page 139, volume II, for FCP 6.0. I haven't tried it. It might be one of those things that should work, but doesn't.
For my purposes, I only needed cuts, but it's good to know the EDL can theoretically handle more than that.
