ipod only charges when connected to computer.help!!

hey there i really need some help. i have a windows xp laptop and ive never had any troubles with it or my ipod until 3 days ago. whenever i plug in my ipod it just says charging and the computer or itunes doesn't even recognize it's plugged in. it's never done this before and i have no idea what to do. please help!!
