Q: Import footage from iMovie "Zoomed" in???

When I import from iMovie all my footage is zoomed in. For example, in iMovie I might film or have a picture of my daughter's face. After importing it, you are looking at her nose, it is zoomed in so much.

Any help with this matter greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Phil

Where are you viewing the footage? The Viewer? The Canvas? In either case, click the percentage button near the top center of whichever window you're looking at and select "Fit to Window." See if that helps.

A side question: Are you capturing in iMovie? If so, why?

    I am viewing the canvas.

I see what you are talking about, and that is not it. I "fit to window" or select 50%, and it is still zoomed in to my daughter's nose rather than showing her face.

I am importing via iMovie because I was hoping to rough cut it in iMovie, and then do some finishing touches in FCE as the tutorials for iMovie and FCE suggest I can do.

Again, any help is greatly appreciated.

    Phil

Please specify exactly what settings you used in iMovie, what format your media is and how you ingested it into iMovie, how you exported from iMovie and what settings you're using in FCE.

I am not sure what settings I am using in iMovie.

Media is jpg and .mod files from JVC video camera.

I exported iMovie using Share>Export Final Cut XML (as suggest by online tutorials for iMovie and FCE)

I am not sure what settings I am using in FCE.

If anyone knows of any good, FREE screen recording software I will put it up on youtube.

    Thanks,

    Phil

When you import the material into iMovie it gives you options, which did you choose? You can get some information in project properties in the iMovie File menu. Also check the clips in the QuickTime player. Look in movie info and see exactly what it says. Please give as full information as you can.

.mod files do not work in FCE. Please be exact which JVC camera this is.

Go to easy setup in FCE and see what is selected, if you left the default, it's mostly likely standard definition DV. Is your material HD or SD?

"Also check the clips in the QuickTime player. Look in movie info and see exactly what it says. Please give as full information as you can."

I AM ONLY USING PHOTOS IN MY LAST IMPORT. STILL ZOOMED IN WHEN OPENED IN FCE.

".mod files do not work in FCE. Please be exact which JVC camera this is."

    JVC 30 GIG EVERIO GZ-MG37U

"Go to easy setup in FCE and see what is selected, if you left the default, it's mostly likely standard definition DV."

"Is your material HD or SD?"

    MATERIAL IS SD.

The last time I did an export I did not include video, only pictures. It is still zoomed in when I open in Final Cut Express.

ANY help is greatly appreciated! I am surprised no one else seems to be having this problem?!? I get this "zoomed in" problem every time.

I don't believe the Everio standard def media is supported in FCE. To use it in FCE you have to convert it. I think iMovie works with it natively which is why you can't bring it into FCE. That it's only still probably doesn't make a difference as the sequence specification is set in iMovie and it doesn't match an FCE sequence setting. That's all I can think of. It's not a common problem. I've not heard of it before.

    Thank you.

How would you suggest I convert it? In other words, what would be the easiest way for a rookie like me?

To convert the camera material use MPEG Streamclip and convert to QuickTime using the DV NTSC codec.

Tom, you should get a fee for all the questions I am asking.

Is MPEG Streamclip and application I download, or do I convert it within iMovie?

    Thanks again (sheepishly).

Is MPEG Streamclip a download by a company called Squared 5?

If so, I think I got it.

Tom, you are awesome. Do you get paid for this?
