My Power Mac G4 (933 MHz) stopped starting up in System 9 a few weeks ago. After many attempts to reinstall software (it was running OS X 10.3.3 and 9.2.2) the hard drive died. I replaced it with the same size and model (80 GB Seagate Ultra ATA Barracuda). I reinstalled the 10.3.3 software, using extended, not journaled, because journaled doesn't work with 9, and updated software to 10.3.9. But then could not get the System 9 install disk (the original that came with the computer) to c-boot. I repaired the permissions. When I tried to install w/out c-boot it would first say the Quicktime 6.0.3 needed to be installed, and then give me error message of "Mac OS Setup Assistant cannot be found." I downloaded the QT and the 9.2.2 software from Apple site. The QT software knocked out my ability to connect keyboard to monitor. When trying to install 9.2.2 it gave error message of "problem with Big System Morsels" and then quit. I started over with the original Power Mac G4 OS 10.1.2 install disk, then followed up with 9.2 install disk. As c-boot it would either not be recognized or would start up in 9.2 and then bomb. I got back to OS X, checked for software updates, installed a security update, tried the System 9 disk again and it installed the software. Finally. BUT...when I selected startup disk from Control Panels (was in 9) all it offered was 9.1.2 (although the software disk said 9.2.2). Restart gave blank screen. Restarted from 9 install disk: got about a quarter through startup, the wheel starts to slow, then grinds to a halt with the bomb. Repeated several times, all the same result. Opened drawer using mouse-down on startup (I'd be lost without this), switched to the OS X install disk, reinstalled the OS X software, restarted from hard drive, ok. Checked start up disk options in Preferences, System 9.2.2 was option (why was it 9.1.2 before?) and so tried restarting in 9.2.2. Voila! I can hardly believe it! Connected to Airport, no problem. Connected to internet, no problem. Keyboard still doesn't work when pluggged into monitor USB, but I can live with that. Turned off the auto updater in control panels, which used to cause crash at midnight if the computer was running 9. Installed printer software for Epson 9500 (the whole reason I just spent 8 hours trying to install 9 is that the printer only runs on native 9), required restart, and guess what, now it is back to the bomb on startup. AAAAARRRRGGGHHHHH.
