"The backup disk image could not be created."

OK so let's start a new topic and try to get this done. When I try to back up the computer it cycles through and then says "Time Machine Error. The backup disk image could not be created." Now what?

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.4.11)

Hello again!

These suggestions have worked for others...

*_"The Backup Disk Image Could Not Be Created"_*
Here are a couple possible reasons for the error message, “The Backup Disk Image Could Not Be Created”:

*Missing Computer Name*
First, you might be missing a computer name in the Sharing Preference pane.

Go into System Preferences --> Sharing.
Is the box labeled “Computer Name” empty? If it is blank, you need to put in a name for your computer. Otherwise Time Machine won’t be able to perform backups.

Time Machine may experience problems if your computer name includes certain characters. Make sure the computer name only includes ASCII characters from the following set.

(0123456789abcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyzABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ)

Once a change in the computer name occurs, you should stop and restart Sharing on the affected computer. Uncheck and then recheck Sharing in the Services list on the left.

*Reselect Time Machine Backup*
Next, the link to the network drive “Backup” has been lost. Go into System Preferences --> Time Machine --> “Change Disk…” and select the the backup drive again from the list of available volumes. Do this:

Go to System Preferences --> Time Machine.
Click the "Change Disk..." button.
Select "None" and click "Stop Backing Up".
Now click "Choose Backup Disk" and reselect your drive again.
Close System Preferences and try backing-up again.

Let us know if any of the above resolved your issue.

Cheers!

Hello Glenn,

I am getting the "Backup Disk Image Could Not Be Created" message on my MacBook Air while attempting to back-up. Everything worked fine for 3 months and suddenly it stopped working.

I do have a computer name and I tried reselecting to backup disk. I have tried connecting via wireless and ethernet with the same results. I have reset the TC, both soft and hard, and have erased all contents to try for a fresh start - to no avail.

I can write other files to the TC. The only thing that does not work are back-ups. Any ideas?

Cheers!

"The backup disk image could not be created."
